Los Angeles has officially commenced a $2.62 billion expansion of the LA Convention Center, a project aimed at revitalizing the local economy and preparing for the upcoming 2028 Olympics. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, with Mayor Karen Bass highlighting the initiative as a cornerstone for the city’s future.
During the ceremony, City Councilmember Curren Price experienced a health scare, requiring immediate attention from the Los Angeles Fire Department. Despite the incident, the event continued, though further details regarding Price’s condition were not disclosed.
The project is designed to create over 15,000 jobs and generate an estimated $652 million in general fund tax revenue over the next 30 years. Additionally, the expansion is expected to boost annual visitor spending by over $150 million. Mayor Bass expressed her commitment to the project, stating, “This is a very, very serious investment. None of us take this lightly,” as reported by ABC7.
Investment in Future Growth
Concerns have been raised regarding the timeline for the completion of the expansion, particularly as it must be finished before the March 2028 deadline for the Olympics. Despite these concerns, Mayor Bass remains optimistic about the transformative impact this project will have on the city.
Efforts to enhance security and mental health support in the downtown area are also being prioritized as part of this initiative. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has pledged to deploy foot and bike patrols across neighborhoods, alongside trained mental health teams focusing on areas such as the Historic Core.
In addition to security measures, the city plans to expedite permits for local developments. Cleanliness campaigns are underway to address issues like graffiti and litter in public spaces, aiming to create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

City Councilmember Tim McOsker emphasized the long-term benefits of the project, stating, “The beneficiaries of this project are not here.
