Major U.S. airlines are taking proactive measures as a significant winter storm, labeled Winter Storm Fern by the Weather Channel, is set to impact travel across the country. Forecasts predict heavy snow, ice, and frigid temperatures beginning on January 23, 2024, affecting an estimated 230 million people throughout the South, Midwest, and Northeast. As a result, airlines are preparing for potential flight cancellations and delays, prompting them to issue travel waivers.
Airlines are allowing customers to adjust their travel plans without incurring penalties. This includes not only the waiver of change fees but also the option to rebook flights to more favorable dates. Notably, travel agency Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS) reported a 17% increase in sales of its “Disruption Assistance” policy, which allows travelers to rebook on the next available flight across different carriers.
Airline Responses to Winter Storm Fern
American Airlines announced a travel alert on January 22, 2024, stating that passengers with bookings at affected airports may change their flights without fees. This applies to customers flying to, from, or through 34 U.S. airports between January 23 and January 25. However, customers are required to retain their original origin and destination cities and must make any changes by January 25. Travel must be completed within one year from the original ticket purchase date.
Similarly, Delta Air Lines emphasized its commitment to customer flexibility. The airline is allowing passengers scheduled to travel from Friday through Sunday to rebook their flights without additional charges. This policy covers flights across Texas, the Southeast, and Northeast regions. Delta will inform affected customers via text or email notifications.
Budget carrier Frontier Airlines has also waived change and cancellation fees for flights impacted by the storm, provided customers maintain their original cities of departure and arrival. Passengers will still be liable for any fare differences when rebooking.
Additional Airline Policies and Recommendations
JetBlue has implemented a similar waiver for flights to and from a dozen cities, allowing changes or cancellations without penalties for bookings made before January 22. Spirit Airlines announced it would not charge fare differences for customers who choose to rebook weekend flights through January 28.
Southwest Airlines alerted customers that flights scheduled from January 23 to January 26 may experience delays, diversions, or cancellations. Passengers with reservations during this period can rebook their flights without incurring fare increases.
Finally, United Airlines has joined in the effort by permitting customers who purchased tickets before January 20 for travel between January 24 and January 26 to reschedule without change fees. New flights must be booked between the same cities and can depart between January 21 and January 28.
As Winter Storm Fern approaches, airlines are encouraging travelers to stay informed and consider their options carefully to mitigate potential disruptions to their travel plans.
