UPDATE: A new grassroots initiative, Adair County Healthy Connections, has just launched in Greenfield, Iowa, aimed at strengthening mental health resources and fostering community connections. Founded by Whitney Lewis after the conclusion of Project Recovery Iowa, this organization is a direct response to urgent mental health needs exacerbated by recent local disasters.
The initiative emerged following the tornado that struck earlier this year, leading to a surge in mental health concerns among residents. Whitney Lewis, motivated by her own experiences and community support, stated, “This community has lifted me up in the darkest of times. I would rather put my efforts back into our community.”
Adair County Healthy Connections is collaborating with key local organizations, including the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation and Greenfield United Methodist Church, to provide comprehensive mental health support. “It’s connections,” said Pastor Melinda Stonebraker, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among various community sectors, including schools and healthcare providers.
The organization hosted a successful community barbecue this summer and is set to continue its outreach with a program called Community Conversations. The next session will take place on August 25, 2023, at Greenfield United Methodist Church. This initiative aims to create safe spaces for residents to discuss mental health openly, breaking down the stigma surrounding emotional struggles.
“We haven’t done a great job of teaching people to understand our emotions,” Stonebraker pointed out. “Our emotions are a gift to communicate something.” The need for mental health services became even more apparent as the community navigated the aftermath of the tornado, with many residents unprepared for the emotional toll.
Participants in the program, including Senior Life Solutions’ Kori Newbury and Amanda Rivera, highlight the importance of inclusivity in mental health discussions. “Mental health and making a difference — to feel like you belong, you matter — is an important component to mental health,” Stonebraker noted.
This initiative not only addresses immediate mental health needs but also fosters long-lasting connections within the community. The diverse board assembled by Lewis includes professionals from various fields, indicating a robust support network aimed at evolving with the community’s needs.
