Phillies’ Alvarado Apologizes as Suspension Nears End

UPDATE: Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado has issued a public apology as he approaches the end of his 80-game suspension for violating MLB’s drug policy. In a heartfelt Instagram post on Tuesday, Alvarado expressed remorse to his teammates and fans, stating, “I am fully aware that using prohibited substances is wrong… I made a mistake and therefore, I have faced the consequences set forth by MLB.”

The hard-throwing left-hander’s suspension stems from a positive test for exogenous testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance, which led to his suspension being announced on May 18. As he prepares to return, Alvarado can begin a minor league assignment and is eligible to rejoin the team on August 19. However, he will be ineligible to pitch in the postseason, a critical blow for the Phillies, who currently lead the National League Central by 1.5 games.

Alvarado, who has a commendable record of 4-1 with seven saves and a 2.70 ERA in 20 appearances this season, emphasized the importance of learning from his error, noting, “There is always a lesson to be learned in every mistake.” The pitcher has struck out 25 batters while walking only four in 20 innings pitched this season.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski confirmed that the positive test was linked to a weight-loss drug Alvarado took during the offseason. The suspension will cost Alvarado approximately $4.5 million, half of his $9 million salary this year, as part of his $22 million, three-year contract signed in 2023. The team holds a $9 million option for 2026 with a $500,000 buyout.

As Alvarado returns to Citizens Bank Park, his team has made notable roster changes, including the acquisition of closer Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins. Manager Rob Thomson remarked on the bullpen’s performance during Alvarado’s absence, stating, “I think they’ve done pretty well without him… But [Alvarado] certainly is going to bring more energy, and he’s going to bring another really, really good arm.”

The urgency of Alvarado’s return could not be more pronounced as the Phillies gear up for the final stretch of the season. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see how the left-hander’s return will bolster the team as they aim for a successful playoff run.

Stay tuned as this story develops and updates on Alvarado’s progress are confirmed. The Phillies are poised for a critical moment in their season, and the return of their star reliever is keenly anticipated.
