Fitness and Politics: Are Healthy Lifestyles Becoming Partisan?

As discussions around health and fitness intensify, the conversation has taken an unexpected turn, with some attributing political affiliations to personal wellness choices. Recent comments suggest that individuals who prioritize fitness and a healthy lifestyle may be viewed with skepticism, particularly by those on the political left. This shift has been observed since former President Donald Trump returned to the political spotlight, sparking a dialogue about the intersection of health and political identity.

During the summer months, many people gravitate towards outdoor activities, such as beach outings. However, the troubling statistic that over 70% of Americans are classified as overweight or obese highlights a growing public health concern. This trend, which has escalated over the last few decades, brings forth serious implications for both individual health and national wellbeing. Acknowledging this, Trump recently signed an executive order aimed at reestablishing the Presidential Fitness Test in American public schools, a program that had been discontinued in the 2012-13 school year under former President Barack Obama.

The executive order emphasizes the need to confront the declining physical health of the American population. In it, Trump stated, “We must address the threat to the vitality and longevity of our country that is posed by America’s declining health and physical fitness.” The order comes at a time when childhood obesity rates have surged to 20%, a significant increase from the 5% reported in the 1970s. This alarming rise not only raises health concerns but also affects national security, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that only 40% of young adults are physically fit enough to enlist in the military.

Despite these pressing issues, Trump’s initiative has faced criticism from various media outlets and commentators. For instance, MSNBC described his revival of the fitness test as “an outdated and problematic practice,” while The New York Times criticized the announcement, suggesting that it would invoke negative memories for many Americans who struggled with physical assessments during their school years.

The conversation around fitness is not limited to youth programs; it has expanded to include adult fitness trends as well. Earlier this year, fitness influencer MaryBeth Monaco-Vavrik suggested that the rise of certain fitness activities, such as Pilates, is linked to a broader political narrative. She argued that these trends reflect a shift towards “extreme American authoritarianism.” This perspective has gained traction, with some claiming that physical fitness and conservative ideology are intertwined.

The implications of these sentiments extend to perceptions of masculinity as well. Actor Sacha Baron Cohen faced backlash for his physical transformation, with some media outlets suggesting that his new physique is “repellent to most women.” This reaction underscores the complex relationship between fitness, gender norms, and political identity, particularly as such discussions intensify in the current political climate.

As the debate continues, some commentators warn that associating fitness with political affiliation can have detrimental effects. A 2024 column in The Guardian cautioned, “There is a dark side to wellness,” implying that the push for fitness could be misconstrued as a sign of political alignment. In this context, even enjoying the sun and maintaining a tan could make one a target of political labeling, as observed in critiques of Trump and his health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr..

Ultimately, the majority of individuals who engage in fitness activities do so for personal health benefits, not political motives. As the conversation evolves, it is crucial to recognize the potential harm in politicizing such a fundamental aspect of human well-being. The focus should remain on promoting health and fitness for all, regardless of political belief, to ensure a healthier future for subsequent generations.
