AI Stock ASML Plummets Nearly 9% Amid Tariff Shockwaves

UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, AI stock ASML plummeted nearly 9% today following critical tariff announcements that have sent ripples through the semiconductor industry. The company’s CEO, Christophe Fouquet, warned of “increasing uncertainty” stemming from geopolitical tensions, underscoring the fragility of the AI supply chain.

Tariffs have escalated dramatically as the U.S.-China trade war intensifies, with Washington imposing 25% tariffs on semiconductor chips and tools. In retaliation, Beijing has slapped 34% duties on U.S. chip exports, leading to skyrocketing costs and a fragmented supply chain for major AI players. This situation is not just a political standoff; it is a looming crisis for the tech industry.

The fallout is severe. Nvidia recently recorded a staggering $4.5 billion writedown on its H20 chips bound for China due to an April export ban. Similarly, AMD is scrambling to secure export licenses for its MI308 processors to regain access to Chinese markets. The financial strain is evident; U.S. giants like Applied Materials and Lam Research face annual losses exceeding $1 billion from these tariffs.

Despite posting impressive second-quarter results with €7.7 billion in net sales against an expected €7.52 billion, ASML’s outlook for the future has darkened significantly. The company’s profit reached €2.29 billion, surpassing guidance of €2.04 billion, yet this could not prevent the stock’s sharp decline. The guidance for Q3 has fallen short, with projected sales between €7.4 billion and €7.9 billion, below the €8.3 billion consensus.

Fouquet’s tone marked a stark contrast to last November’s optimistic projections for 2026. He admitted, “We cannot confirm it at this stage,” reflecting the growing anxiety among investors. The reduction in ASML’s full-year net sales growth target to 15% from an earlier ambitious range of €30 billion to €35 billion adds to the mounting concerns.

The implications are profound. With major customers like Intel and TSMC at risk from shifting U.S. policies, the AI sector is bracing for potential further disruptions. Investors are on high alert, watching for every development in ongoing trade talks, as any new tariffs could exacerbate the already precarious situation.

As the market reacts to these urgent developments, the future of AI investment hangs in the balance, and the pressure on companies like ASML continues to mount. Stay tuned for real-time updates as this story unfolds.
