In a solid display of talent, the San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-1 during a Spring Training game on March 15, 2024. Two pitchers competing for a spot in the rotation, Germán Márquez and Marco Gonzales, delivered standout performances, showcasing their potential to secure a place on the team.
Márquez, who signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract as training commenced, became the first Padres pitcher this spring to complete three scoreless innings. He threw just 35 pitches, allowing only two singles while striking out three batters. Gonzales, a veteran returning from flexor tendon surgery, followed suit with three additional scoreless innings, demonstrating resilience by navigating early challenges, including an error and a walk.
Several players contributed offensively, with Jake Cronenworth performing notably well. He went 1-for-2 with a walk, lifting his batting average to .636 over the last three games after a slow start. Miguel Andujar also impressed, finishing 1-for-1 with a walk and maintaining a strong batting line of .381/.519/.714 in 27 plate appearances this spring. Nick Castellanos added to the offensive momentum, recording a hit in his second consecutive game.
Despite struggling at the plate, Gavin Sheets drew his team-high seventh walk of the spring, while Ty France, competing for a position on the roster, collected a hit to raise his average to .381. Luis Campusano managed a bloop single, marking his third hit in 18 at-bats, as he continues to vie for a place on the team.
In the bullpen, Adrian Morejón struck out three of the four batters he faced in the seventh inning. Jeremiah Estrada ended the eighth on a high note, earning a strikeout after walking a batter earlier in the inning. Estrada’s spring statistics show he has faced 18 batters, with five walks and six strikeouts, maintaining a solid performance.
Defensively, Cronenworth exhibited his skills at shortstop, fielding a hard hit grounder from Ben Cowles and making an impressive throw to first base. Andujar, who has played multiple positions, committed his first error of the spring during his second start at third base.
Looking ahead, right-hander Michael King is set to make his third start of the spring against the Cubs at 12:05 p.m. PT on March 16, 2024, in Goodyear, Arizona. The Padres continue to prepare for the upcoming season, with players demonstrating their capabilities and solidifying their roles within the team.
As Spring Training progresses, the Padres have shown promising signs, with both positional players and pitchers stepping up. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as decisions regarding the final roster take shape in the coming weeks.
