A wedding celebration in Panipat, northern India, turned into a scene of horror when a six-year-old girl, Vidhi, was allegedly drowned by her aunt, Poonam. Reports indicate that Poonam believed no child in her family should be more beautiful than her, prompting this tragic incident during a family gathering on what was supposed to be a joyous occasion.
According to Bhupender Singh, the Superintendent of Police in Panipat, the accused has a disturbing history. “The accused appears to be a psychopath. She believed no child in her family should be more beautiful than her,” Singh stated in an interview with India Today. This chilling confession suggests that Poonam may have previously murdered three other children, including her own son.
The events unfolded as Vidhi attended the wedding with her family. After receiving a distressing call about her disappearance, her father and family members launched a search. Tragically, after an hour-long search, Vidhi’s grandmother, Omwati, discovered her lifeless body in a nearby storeroom. Her head was submerged under water, and she was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to NC Medical College.
The investigation indicates that Poonam’s actions are not isolated. Local reports suggest she confessed to the murders of four children, including her niece and her own son. In a disturbing incident earlier in August 2023, she reportedly killed another girl in nearby Siwah simply because she was deemed “prettier” than her.
Witnesses at the wedding were left in shock as the situation escalated from celebration to tragedy. The wedding festivities were overshadowed by the urgent search for Vidhi, marking a day that should have been filled with joy and love.
In a separate but equally tragic event, a groom collapsed and died from a heart attack while dancing with his bride at their reception. The joyous atmosphere turned somber as guests attempted to revive him, but their efforts were in vain. This incident further emphasizes the unpredictability of life and the sadness that can accompany moments of celebration.
Poonam is currently in custody, with formal charges yet to be filed against her. This horrific case raises urgent questions about mental health and familial relationships, leaving a community grappling with grief and shock in the aftermath of a tragic day that began with hopes for love and happiness.
