New Braunfels Welcomes Retro-Inspired Petit Cowboy Cabins

A historic vacation property near New Braunfels, Texas, has undergone a significant transformation to embrace a retro camp aesthetic. The Austin-based boutique hotel group, French Cowboys, has announced the opening of Petit Cowboy at 1020 N. Houston Ave. The property, which offers a special promotion through March 2024, features a total of 48 rooms across 23 cabins situated along the picturesque Comal River.

Originally known by various names, including Ulbricht’s Summer Resort and Heidelberg Lodges, the site was acquired by French Cowboys in 2025. Since then, the team has focused on revitalizing the property, enhancing both the exterior and interior to attract visitors throughout the year. According to a press release from the company, this refresh aims to maintain the property’s original charm while modernizing its offerings.

Franklin Dusserre, co-founder of French Cowboys, emphasized the importance of preserving the property’s legacy. “Our goal is simple: to ensure past and new guests can enjoy this ‘Living Heirloom’ for decades to come,” he stated. The renovations prioritize a cabin feel, featuring playful color palettes and midcentury-style furniture, alongside nostalgic touches reminiscent of summer camp, such as pennants with French-Texan phrases.

Modern Amenities and Accommodations

Guests at Petit Cowboy can expect a variety of upgraded amenities designed for comfort and convenience. Improvements include new storage solutions, upgraded beds, and refreshed bathroom finishes. Each cabin features kitchenettes equipped with two-burner cooktops, compact refrigerators, and added shelving for a more functional experience.

The property offers six types of accommodations, capable of sleeping between two to six guests. Pet-friendly options are available for an additional fee of $40 per night. Some cabins come with unique layouts, including breakfast bars, living rooms, and pull-out sofas to enhance the guest experience.

Outdoor amenities have also been upgraded. The main pool and a shallow pool will be maintained year-round, providing a perfect spot for relaxation. New loungers enhance the poolside atmosphere, while communal areas for games, grilling spaces, and a refurbished pickleball court add to the recreational options.

Dining options at Petit Cowboy include the Pool House & Bar, which offers a range of meals and snacks throughout the day. Menu highlights feature café items like signature pop-tarts and croissants, as well as poolside snacks including chilled fruit and salads. Family-friendly pizzas and sandwiches are also available, complemented by nostalgic desserts like brownie sundaes.

Preserving History with a Modern Twist

French Cowboys has a track record of restoring historic properties with unique styles. Last year, the group unveiled the updated Hacienda del Rio in Gruene, which features Spanish colonial influences. Co-founder Dylan Petrich shared the vision behind their projects, stating, “We look for places with history and strong community ties. The Petit Cowboy property has been part of New Braunfels summers for generations. Our role is to preserve what makes it special while making it functional for how people travel today.”

Nightly rates at Petit Cowboy start at $129 for Deluxe King rooms. An introductory promotion offers guests who book a two-night stay through March a complimentary third night, redeemable until December 31, 2026, using the code PETITCOWBOY. Availability may vary, making early booking advisable.

With its blend of modern amenities and retro charm, Petit Cowboy aims to create lasting memories for both returning and first-time visitors to the New Braunfels area.
