Ionia Boys Basketball Falls to Portland in District Final Showdown

The Ionia boys basketball team faced a challenging conclusion to their season, losing to Portland 64-41 in the district final on March 15, 2024. This marked the third defeat of the season for the Bulldogs against the Raiders, who dominated early on and maintained control throughout the match in Belding.

Ionia entered the title game as underdogs, having achieved two upset victories earlier in the tournament. They defeated the No. 3 seed Alma on March 11 and the top-seeded Central Montcalm on March 13, providing a glimmer of hope as they advanced to the final.

The game began with a rapid 14-0 run by the Raiders, a daunting challenge for Ionia. However, the Bulldogs quickly regrouped, cutting into the lead and displaying resilience as the first quarter closed with the score at 19-10. Ionia junior Ethan Wenzel ignited the team with a layup, contributing to a total of 13 points for the night, but the Bulldogs struggled to keep pace.

Head coach Scott Swinehart commented on the team’s effort, noting, “We gave up two big runs early in the game. We had it down to five at one point, but that run they had in the third quarter just put it out of reach.” Despite their best efforts, the Raiders’ scoring power proved overwhelming.

As the second quarter progressed, Ionia managed to contain Portland’s offense, limiting their scoring opportunities. Yet, the Raiders still took a 30-18 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs opened the third quarter strong, with a 12-5 run that brought them within five points, but the Raiders responded decisively, ending the quarter with a 51-34 advantage.

Ionia’s attempts to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter faltered as Portland scored eight unanswered points, effectively sealing the Bulldogs’ fate. Senior players Colt Piercefield and Dawson Leland contributed nine and eight points, respectively, while other team members added to the scoreboard.

Reflecting on the season, Wenzel expressed a forward-looking sentiment, stating, “I think we have a lot of talent coming in. One of our players was hurt this entire season, and he’s a really good basketball player.” He emphasized the potential for growth as the team prepares for the next season.

Swinehart highlighted the development of the team over the season, noting, “The growth we’ve had since our first scrimmage has been tremendous. The guys came to practice every day ready to work, so I guess the torch passes to the younger guys now.”

With a season record of 11-14, the Bulldogs leave the court with a mix of disappointment and optimism, looking ahead to the opportunities that the next season may hold.
