During a transformative year of solo backpacking, Michelle Polizzi discovered that personal growth often flourishes through shared experiences. Initially seeking adventure and self-discovery, Polizzi grappled with unexpected loneliness while traveling through various countries, ultimately realizing the profound impact of human connections.
Seeking Change and Adventure
At the age of 25, Polizzi embarked on a year-long journey to escape her routine life and search for personal growth. After reevaluating her relationship with alcohol, she found herself withdrawing from friendships and seeking solitude. With a newfound desire to change, she bought a one-way ticket to Paris, secured a freelance writing job, and packed her backpack, unsure of how long she would travel.
However, the reality of solo travel soon set in. Three months into her adventure, while hiking the Austrian Alps, she reached a summit surrounded by breathtaking landscapes but felt an overwhelming sense of isolation. “It hit me: I was really alone, in a way I’d never been before,” she reflected. This feeling of loneliness lingered, even in iconic locations like the Colosseum, where she longed for the connections she had left behind.
Finding Community Through Shared Experiences
In an effort to connect with others, Polizzi began volunteering through Workaway, a platform that pairs travelers with local hosts in exchange for work. Her first assignment at a hostel in a small Croatian village introduced her to Sophie, a fellow solo traveler from New Zealand. Their friendship blossomed as they shared stories and navigated the challenges of backpacking together.
Months later, Polizzi visited Sophie’s family dairy farm in New Zealand, where they engaged in local activities and deepened their friendship. “The unknowns of travel were more manageable with a friend,” Polizzi noted, as they explored the beauty of the New Zealand landscape together.
Another memorable encounter occurred while camping outside Venice, Italy. Locked out of her trailer, Polizzi met Liam, who quickly lightened her mood. Their adventure through Venice in search of tiramisu became a cherished memory, illustrating how shared laughter and problem-solving can transform a challenging situation into an enjoyable experience.
Despite these connections, moments of solitude still surfaced during her travels, such as while visiting an empty beach on O’ahu. Yet, these instances were accompanied by a new understanding: she was never truly alone. “I had been wrong to think that solitude would lead to personal growth,” Polizzi acknowledged, realizing that the friendships she formed along her journey were instrumental in her development.
Returning to the United States after a year of travel, Polizzi reunited with loved ones, carrying a fresh perspective. She aimed to be a better listener and more open-minded during discussions, valuing the relationships she had once taken for granted. Her experiences had taught her that the essence of life lies in the connections we build, not just the places we visit.
Ultimately, Polizzi’s solo travel journey was transformative, not because of the destinations she explored but because of the people who accompanied her along the way. “I could never become who I was meant to be without them,” she concluded, reflecting on the profound impact that human connections have on personal growth.
