Born at Camp White near Medford, Oregon, to Frederick James Rose Jr. and Lydia Gale Thomas, Rose spent his formative years in Manhattan Beach, where he cultivated a life marked by service, compassion, and unwavering love.
Throughout his life, Rose demonstrated a strong commitment to his community and faith. After attending American Martyrs School and Mira Costa High School, he graduated from El Camino College. His early career was shaped by service, evidenced by his time in the United States Naval Reserve. Upon returning to civilian life, Rose dedicated over thirty years to the United States Postal Service, where he served the public with distinction. In the early 1980s, he and his wife, Suzie Alston, returned to the Catholic faith at American Martyrs Parish. Their shared values, despite political differences, created a strong bond that lasted throughout their 37 years of marriage.
Commitment to Faith and Community
Rose’s journey of faith deepened when he felt a calling to the Diaconate. After extensive discernment and formation, he accepted this permanent vocation, serving as Deacon for 25 years. Even after retiring, he volunteered for various ministries, engaging with the community at the Welcome Center and remaining a beloved figure among parishioners.
Those who knew Rose remember him as a gentle spirit with a generous heart. He offered wisdom and encouragement, serving as a source of quiet strength for family and friends. The impact of his life was felt deeply, as he touched many lives with his kindness and commitment to service.
His family extends gratitude to those who assisted him in his later years, particularly Ariana and Matt Smith, Vanessa Reyes-Smith, and the American Martyrs team. Their support allowed Rose to remain in the community he loved so dearly.
