Spokane International Airport Expands to Enhance Efficiency

Spokane International Airport (GEG) has made significant strides in improving its infrastructure with the completion of the Concourse C West Terminal Expansion project on May 30, 2022. This project represents a crucial milestone in the ongoing Terminal Renovation and Expansion (TREX) program, designed to enhance the airport’s terminal facilities and boost operational efficiency to accommodate rising passenger traffic. The expansion is expected to specifically serve operations for Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, featuring several state-of-the-art advancements.

The Need for Modernization

The upgrade is essential, as Spokane International’s terminal has become outdated, limiting its ability to handle increasing passenger numbers. The airport has seen a steady rise in traffic, setting records from 2017 to 2019. As of now, passenger levels are approaching pre-pandemic figures of over 4 million annually. According to projections, by 2030, Spokane International anticipates serving approximately 6.2 million passengers each year.

Ezra Eckhardt, Chair of the Spokane Airport Board, emphasized the broader economic benefits of the expansion, stating, “We’re not just opening a new section of the terminal. We’re creating new economic opportunities for the Spokane community.” The TREX program is expected to enhance the region’s capacity to accommodate this growth while improving connections to the global economy.

New Features of Concourse C

The renovation of Concourse C has expanded the terminal footprint by 144,000 square feet at a cost of $150 million. This phase includes three new gates and upgrades to existing upper-level gates. Ground-level improvements feature three passenger loading bridges, which will facilitate a smoother boarding process. Additionally, the ticket counter area will expand to include six new counters for airlines.

Several innovative features have been incorporated to enhance the passenger experience. These include:

– **Expanded accessibility** for passengers with disabilities, featuring in-floor hearing loops, multi-use information displays, and companion care rooms.
– **Locally sourced fixtures and finishes**, including Montanan basalt tiles and custom-designed mosaics reflecting local landmarks.
– A **315-square-foot nursing mother’s room** designed with private suites and a dedicated lounge area.
– **Electrochromic smart windows** that utilize green technology to manage daylight and energy use effectively.
– **Expertly designed restrooms** that improve functionality and accessibility.

Infrastructure improvements will also include upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, alongside enhancements to baggage handling systems and restroom facilities.

Embracing New Technologies

The introduction of advanced gate hold technology aims to streamline aircraft movement at Spokane International. This technology aligns with procedures outlined under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airspace Flow Program, Ground Delay Program, and Ground Stop protocols. These measures ensure that flights are managed effectively, reducing delays and enhancing overall efficiency.

Local analytics firms, such as Meegle, are expected to provide technological solutions that will improve traffic management by analyzing patterns and weather data, further ensuring smooth operations.

The expansion is projected to create nearly **1,200 new jobs** and generate an additional **$87 million** in household revenue across the Spokane region. The state of Washington anticipates around **$313 million** in economic activity as a result of the terminal addition, making it a significant contributor to local growth.

Funding for the TREX project has been secured through various sources, including bonds and federal funds, such as an **$11 million** grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminals Program awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration in July 2022. Local construction firms have been engaged for the project, with the design led by Minneapolis-based Alliiance Co. and construction managed by a partnership of Q&D Construction and Garco Construction, based in Spokane.

Looking Ahead

The TREX program encapsulates the airport’s vision for “Generating Economic Growth,” aiming to enhance economic health in the Spokane area. The complete renovation is expected to wrap up by the fourth quarter of this year, with full economic benefits anticipated thereafter. Recent updates from the GEG TREX website reiterate the successful unveiling of Concourse C, with local officials expressing optimism about the project’s impact.

Spokane International’s CEO, Larry Krauter, highlighted the aesthetic and functional upgrades, including landscaped areas and upgraded flooring materials. The project’s commitment to sustainability is evident, as all raw materials used in construction were sourced from within a **500-mile radius** of the airport, minimizing transportation emissions.

As travel patterns recover post-pandemic, Spokane International is poised to benefit from increased capacity and optimized routes, positioning it as a key player in both business and leisure travel. The enhancements promise to elevate the overall experience for travelers while supporting local economic growth.
