Toms River Co-op Crushes Middletown South 5-0 in Playoff Showdown

UPDATE: The second-seeded Toms River co-op, ranked No. 20 in the NJ.com Top 20, delivered an emphatic 5-0 victory over seventh-seeded Middletown South in the Handchen Cup quarterfinals at Winding River Park earlier today. This decisive win marks a critical turnaround for Toms River, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Nate Danyo was the star of the match, contributing two goals and one assist for Toms River (14-5-1). Goaltender David Gawalis showcased an outstanding performance, stopping all 28 shots he faced, securing a well-deserved shutout.

Toms River jumped to an early lead with Danyo scoring just 11:46 into the first period, assisted by teammates Nico Giannetti and Lucas Rojas. The momentum continued as John Schmitt scored a power-play goal at 1:23 of the second period, with Brady Verdon and Liam Magovern assisting. Danyo struck again just 37 seconds before the second period ended, extending the lead to 3-0.

The third period saw Toms River further solidify their dominance with two additional goals: Jake Letts found the net at 5:43, followed by Lucas Rojas sealing the victory with a goal at 5:03. Despite generating 28 shots on goal, Middletown South (11-10-1) could not penetrate Gawalis’ solid defense. AJ Montanero made 19 saves for Middletown South in a valiant effort.

Toms River’s victory was characterized by balanced scoring, with five different players contributing goals and seven players registering points. Notably, Magovern and Verdon each provided two assists during the match.

Looking ahead, Toms River is set to face sixth-seeded Howell-Matawan in the semifinals on Tuesday, as they aim to continue their playoff push. This victory not only boosts Toms River’s confidence but also promises an exciting matchup in the next round.
