Chinese President Xi Jinping urged U.S. President Donald Trump to exercise “extreme caution” regarding arms sales to Taiwan during a crucial phone call on Wednesday. This conversation highlighted the sensitivity surrounding the Taiwan issue, which both leaders acknowledged as significant for U.S.-China relations. The dialogue aimed to project stability in bilateral ties following recent trade tensions and in anticipation of an expected visit by Trump to China later this year.
According to China’s state broadcaster CCTV, Xi emphasized that the Taiwan question is “the most important issue” in the relationship between the two nations. He reiterated Beijing’s stance that it would never allow Taiwan to separate from China, urging the United States to handle arms sales to Taiwan with care. The self-governing island, which the U.S. does not recognize as a sovereign state, has long been a point of contention in Washington-Beijing relations, particularly regarding military support.
In response to Xi, Trump described both the United States and China as “great nations,” asserting that their bilateral relationship is the most significant in the world. He expressed respect for Xi and welcomed China’s development, indicating a willingness to enhance cooperation and maintain open lines of communication throughout his administration. Trump acknowledged the importance of China’s concerns regarding Taiwan, aiming for “good and stable development” in U.S.-China relations.
The conversation follows a period of strained relations marked by tariffs imposed during Trump’s administration. However, ties have shown signs of stabilization since their meeting in Busan in October. Chinese media reported that Xi stressed the need for ongoing dialogue, proper management of differences, and further cooperation, particularly in light of upcoming global engagements such as APEC and the G20.
