Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders has spoken out regarding the controversy surrounding his son, Shedeur Sanders, after the young quarterback was selected for the Pro Bowl following his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns. Critics have questioned the legitimacy of Shedeur’s selection, particularly given his 56.6 percent completion rate during the season. In response, Deion emphasized the voting process, stating, “Most people don’t know, it’s a percentage; the major percentage is from the coaches and the players, their selection. Then the fans get a smaller percentage of the votes.”
Shedeur, who is filling in for Drake Maye of the New England Patriots, has become a topic of debate in the NFL. Despite starting only seven games and facing scrutiny for his performance, Deion Sanders insists that Shedeur’s Pro Bowl appearance is a testament to his respect among players and coaches in the league.
Reflecting on Progress and Accomplishments
Beyond the Pro Bowl controversy, Deion Sanders also reflected on Shedeur’s unexpected fall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Initially projected as a first-round pick, he was selected in the fifth round. Instead of criticizing the doubters, Deion expressed pride in his son’s accomplishments, stating, “My son did something that I didn’t do. He made the Pro Bowl in his first year. It’s more like a, not I told you so moment, more like a God is good moment.”
Deion Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame player renowned for his defensive prowess, began his own NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons in 1989. He did not earn his first Pro Bowl selection until 1991, demonstrating the competitive nature of the league. His focus remains on celebrating Shedeur’s achievements rather than engaging in the surrounding controversy.
Shedeur Sanders made a significant impact during his time at Colorado, where he transferred after the Buffaloes’ challenging 1–11 season. Over the course of two years, he helped turn the program around, achieving a 69.3 percent completion rate in his first season and throwing for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns.
A Strong Rookie Season
During his second season, Shedeur further distinguished himself, leading the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record and 7-2 against Big 12 opponents. He improved his performance, passing for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns with a remarkable 74.0 percent completion rate. This upward trajectory made his fifth-round selection in the NFL Draft all the more surprising.
After joining the Cleveland Browns, Shedeur’s rookie season began with promise, culminating in his first start during week 12, where he led the team to victory against the Las Vegas Raiders. By the end of the season, he recorded 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 169 rushing yards with one touchdown, finishing the season with a 3-4 record as a starter.
His Pro Bowl selection marks a historic moment, making him the first former Colorado quarterback to achieve this honor since Kordell Stewart in 2001. Deion Sanders remains optimistic about Shedeur’s future, emphasizing his ability to learn and grow as a player in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
As the football season progresses, all eyes will be on Shedeur Sanders, who has already demonstrated his capacity to excel. With his father’s support and guidance, he aims to continue his development and contribute to the success of the Cleveland Browns.
