UPDATE: Elyria Community Partnership has just launched an urgent call for artists to design a stunning mural on the front of Elyria City Hall, facing Ely Square. This project aims to reflect the rich history and vibrant future of Elyria, and artists have until noon on February 10, 2024 to submit their proposals.
Officials stress that this is more than just art; it’s a chance to encapsulate Elyria’s identity. “We’re really looking for an artist who can respect Elyria’s past while also helping us tell a story about where we’re headed,” said Monet Roberts-Walton, executive director of Elyria Community Partnership. This mural is poised to become a landmark piece of public art that engages the community and enhances the downtown area.
The selected artist will engage closely with the partnership, city administration, City Council members, and a focus group that includes local youth. This highly collaborative process ensures that the mural will authentically represent the voices of Elyria’s residents. “We want the artist to engage with our community members, hear their perspectives, and bring those ideas together,” Roberts-Walton added.
Artists from local, regional, and national levels are encouraged to apply, especially those with prior experience in large-scale murals. While specific themes are not mandated, ideas such as cultural heritage, nature, and bold abstract styles have been suggested by stakeholders. This project aligns with Elyria Community Partnership’s broader mission to enhance quality of life and foster downtown vibrancy.
“Art creates a sense of value and pride,” Roberts-Walton stated. “It shows residents and investors that this is a place that cares about itself and is worth investing in.” The mural is intended to be completed later this year, potentially coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and Elyria’s summer programs, pending city approvals.
Interested artists must submit their applications in a single PDF file not exceeding 15MB to [email protected] with the subject line “Elyria City Hall Mural.” For additional information, visit Elyria Community Partnership’s website.
This is a crucial opportunity for artists to leave a lasting mark on the community while capturing the spirit of Elyria. Don’t miss your chance to contribute to this significant project!
