The Utah Mammoth continued their impressive performance by defeating the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Saturday, achieving a franchise record with their ninth consecutive game earning points. The victory came despite challenging winter weather in Nashville, which led to a change in the game’s start time.
Arriving in a snow-covered Nashville, the Mammoth faced conditions that the city was not accustomed to handling. This resulted in a lower-than-expected turnout, with many fans opting to stay home due to icy roads. As a result, spectators in the upper bowl of the arena moved down to the lower sections without incurring any additional costs, resulting in noticeable gaps in attendance.
Early in the first period, Steven Stamkos opened the scoring with a power play goal, showcasing his signature one-timer from the left face-off circle. However, the Mammoth have demonstrated resilience, overcoming early setbacks in recent matches. In their last three games, they conceded four goals within the first five minutes but still managed to secure victories.
“We’ve done a good job of sticking with it,” said Barrett Hayton in a post-game interview. “That’s something we talked about a little bit ago, staying even-keeled and staying with them for 60 minutes. That being said, I don’t think we want to have those starts.”
The Mammoth responded to the early goal by scoring three times in the second period, allowing only one goal against, and headed into the final frame with a 3-2 advantage. Hayton later added an insurance goal during a third-period power play, followed by an unusual automatic goal awarded to JJ Peterka due to a penalty infraction.
With this victory, the Mammoth not only extended their point streak to nine games but also secured their fifth consecutive win. Looking ahead, their next three opponents will pose significant challenges, as they have yet to defeat these teams this season.
Throughout the match, several key defensive plays stood out. In the first period, Mikhail Sergachev executed a remarkable shot block, preventing a goal from Michael McCarron by skillfully sticking his leg out. Moments later, Michael Carcone blocked a shot with his hand, showcasing the physical sacrifices players make for their team’s success. These defensive efforts were crucial, particularly in a game determined by a margin of two goals, excluding the empty-netter.
Another intriguing storyline was the performance of Kailer Yamamoto, who saw his first game in 13 days due to illness affecting teammate Lawson Crouse. Instead of adjusting other lines, Coach Tourigny placed Yamamoto on the top line alongside Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz. This decision yielded immediate results, as Yamamoto contributed significantly with a game-winning goal and two total points, earning him the title of first star of the game.
“Kells and Schmaltzy are two unbelievable players,” Yamamoto noted. “Very easy to play with, read off of and stuff like that.”
Coach Tourigny acknowledged Yamamoto’s skill and the importance of finding the right role for him on the team. “I always say to Yammy he can play top-six anytime we need it, but when we have our top six, it’s tougher,” he stated. “He proved it again today. He jumped in the top six, made impact plays at key moments.”
An unusual play occurred late in the game involving JJ Peterka, who did not register a shot on net but was credited with a goal. During a breakaway towards an empty net, he was fouled from behind by Predators forward Michael Bunting, who was penalized. However, the NHL rulebook specifies that a foul during a breakaway on an empty net results in an automatic goal, even if the puck does not cross the line.
On the offensive side, Clayton Keller continued his hot streak, scoring a goal that marked his fourth consecutive game with points. He now boasts 14 points in his last eight games, further solidifying his status as a key player for the Mammoth.
The Mammoth’s latest win encapsulates their resilience and ability to adapt, positioning them strongly as they prepare for more challenging matches ahead.
