Indiana University cornerback D’Angelo Ponds has announced his decision to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft. This announcement came during a fan event at Raising Cane’s in Bloomington, Indiana, where Ponds confirmed, “the plan” is to pursue a professional football career. Although he had not made a formal announcement prior to this event, his intention was clear.
Ponds accepted an invitation to participate in the prestigious Senior Bowl, scheduled for January 31, 2024. This showcase game is seen as a pivotal opportunity for college players to impress NFL scouts and executives as they prepare for the upcoming draft.
Throughout the past season, Ponds demonstrated exceptional talent on the field. He led Indiana with 10 pass breakups and recorded two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown on the very first play against Oregon during Indiana’s Peach Bowl victory in the College Football Playoff semifinals. His contributions also included a forced fumble, a blocked kick, and a total of 61 tackles.
Having transferred from James Madison University, Ponds quickly established himself as a key player for Indiana. He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors twice and was recognized as the defensive MVP in both the Rose Bowl and the Peach Bowl. His performance in the national championship game against Miami further solidified his reputation, where he recorded three pass breakups.
