Rena Singer, a cherished mother and grandmother, passed away on January 21, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on September 17, 1936, in Hartford, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Ruben and Clara Levitt. Rena spent the majority of her life in West Hartford, where she built a legacy centered around family and community.
A Life Rich in Family and Tradition
Rena is survived by her three children: Jeff Schuman (Lauren), Robin Wilson, and Samuel Singer (Susan). She was a proud grandmother to Zachary Bernal Wilson (Genevieve), Marc Schuman, Cameron Wilson (fiancée Paige Honeycomb), Danielle Schuman (fiancée Everett Sussman), Julia Singer, Anna Singer, and Max Singer. Her family, including many nieces and nephews, will deeply miss her warmth and love.
Throughout her life, Rena emphasized the importance of family gatherings, often hosting holidays at her home in West Hartford or enjoying time together at Beach Park in Clinton, Connecticut. Known for her exceptional culinary skills, her tzimmes and kugel were staples during Jewish holidays, bringing everyone together around the table.
Community Engagement and Personal Touch
Rena had a vibrant personality and a great sense of humor, qualities that helped her forge lasting friendships. She played Mahjong several times a week with a close-knit group of friends, cherishing the bonds she created over the years. After her retirement, she spent winters in Florida, welcoming visitors and sharing her love for life with those around her.
She faced health challenges with remarkable resilience, never complaining despite her circumstances. Her family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cherry Brook Health Center for their compassionate care during the final years of her life. They also extend thanks to Carol Wilson for her unwavering support and dedication to Rena.
The funeral service for Rena Singer will take place at 10:00 a.m. today at Beth El Temple, located at 2626 Albany Avenue in West Hartford, with Rabbi Rosen officiating. Following the service, interment will be at Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery in Wethersfield. After the burial, the family invites relatives and friends to gather at the home of Jeff and Lauren Schuman for remembrance.
Shiva will be observed on the evening of January 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again on January 22 during the same hours. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, an organization dedicated to supporting those affected by the disease.
Rena Singer leaves behind a rich legacy of love, laughter, and family devotion, a testament to her remarkable character and spirit.
