Paddlers from across the region are preparing for an exciting day of competition at the Rowan Chamber’s 11th Annual Dragon Boat Festival, set to take place on July 26, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at High Rock Lake in Salisbury, North Carolina. This year’s festival promises a vibrant atmosphere as teams from corporate sponsors, community groups, and novice paddlers come together to race in traditional 20-person dragon boats.
The event features a diverse lineup of teams, including corporate groups such as the Anchors Up, sponsored by Anchor Downs Subdivision, and club teams like the Charlotte Fury and Charlotte Surge. Other notable participants include the Fiber Dragons, Freightliner Fury, and last year’s community champions, Strokes of Genius, backed by F&M Bank.
Excitement Builds for the Competition
As the festival approaches, team captain Lori Jordan of Strokes of Genius expressed enthusiasm for the competition. “We’re so excited to compete again this year and come together as a team. It’s all about having fun, working together, and celebrating our community,” she stated. Teams will paddle in sync to the rhythm of an onboard drummer, competing for medals and the honor of being crowned champions.
The Rowan Chamber encourages community members to attend and support their favorite teams. Chamber President Elaine Spalding highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “We are very appreciative of all our sponsors, teams, vendors, and volunteers. All the money raised goes toward our small business programs and services.”
A Day of Fun and Community Engagement
The Dragon Boat Festival is recognized as the largest annual spectator event on High Rock Lake, attracting over 5,000 spectators last year. Visitors can look forward to thrilling dragon boat races, local vendor booths, and a variety of food trucks, along with family-friendly activities throughout the day. The festival is free to attend, and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfort.
Parking is available for $10 per car or $20 for preferred parking, with proceeds benefiting the East Rowan football team. Attendees are reminded that pets, coolers, and outside food are not permitted on the festival grounds.
For those traveling to the event, there is an opportunity to extend the visit with a weekend getaway. By booking an overnight stay through VisitRowanCounty.com, guests can receive 50 percent back in VISA e-Gift Card rewards by selecting the “Summer Fun in Rowan County Stay & Play Package.”
