British rock band Bring Me the Horizon surprised fans on July 11, 2024, with the release of their new album, titled Lo-files. This 23-song collection features lo-fi remixes of popular tracks from their earlier works, including the acclaimed Sempiternal (2013) and their latest album, Post Human: Nex Gen.
Frontman Oli Sykes described Lo-files as “utility music,” designed to provide a calming backdrop for creativity. “The original idea for our Go To record, Music To Listen To… (2019), was intended to be something more chill: a record you could put on while studying or zoning out,” Sykes explained. “It ended up way more chaotic than I originally intended. So I guess this is another attempt at creating something low-key.”
In recent years, the trend of reimagining songs has gained momentum, with other artists also exploring new interpretations of their work. Irish band Fontaines D.C. recently showcased this approach by covering Bring Me the Horizon’s “Can You Feel My Heart” during their appearance on Triple J’s Like a Version. This mashup included elements from Nirvana’s iconic “Heart-Shaped Box,” blending the two songs seamlessly.
The cover begins with a haunting, slow tempo, highlighted by the deep tones of lead singer Grian Chatten. As the performance progresses, Chatten transitions to the lyrics of “Heart-Shaped Box,” creating a captivating experience. Describing their choice to cover “Can You Feel My Heart,” Conor Curley, guitarist for Fontaines D.C., noted that it was initially their frontman’s idea.
“I think the sound of that song, the kind of electronic elements, and just the general vibe reflect stuff we were touching on our last album, Romance,” Curley stated, as reported by NME. He emphasized the emotional connection to “Heart-Shaped Box,” recalling that it was one of the first songs he learned to play on guitar in drop D tuning.
As Bring Me the Horizon continues to innovate within their music, Lo-files reflects a significant departure from their usual sound. The album aims to provide listeners with a soothing ambiance, catering to those who seek a quieter, more introspective listening experience. This unexpected release not only showcases the band’s versatility but also highlights the ongoing evolution of rock music in today’s landscape.
With Lo-files, Bring Me the Horizon invites fans to engage with their music in a new way, proving that even established artists can explore fresh avenues within their craft.
