Moms Share Unique Safety Tips for Kids on TikTok

A mother’s call for creative safety tips for children on TikTok has sparked a wave of responses from parents sharing their most unconventional advice. Paige Catherine Johnson, a mother of four, initiated the conversation by asking fellow parents to share unique strategies that go beyond the usual guidance, like “Don’t talk to strangers.” The response was overwhelming, with numerous mothers offering insights on water safety, self-defense, and body autonomy.

Johnson’s prompt resonated widely, as she expressed her desire for tips that would “stick” with children while providing peace of mind. Comments ranged from the psychological—such as, “Adults never ask kids for help”—to more controversial methods, like shouting curse words in public to deter potential abductors. The exchange highlighted the diverse and sometimes unconventional approaches parents take to ensure their children’s safety.

Creative Safety Strategies from Parents

Among the suggestions, one TikTok user shared a clever method involving a high-five before entering a pool. This technique serves as a reminder for parents to be vigilant before children enter the water. Johnson, whose children are aged 7, 4, 2, and 5 months, noted that safety is always a priority in her household.

Dr. Felton, a pediatrician based in Louisville, Kentucky, underscored the importance of children learning the correct anatomical terms for their bodies. “This way, we’re all communicating clearly,” Dr. Felton stated. She explained that using proper terminology helps children understand which body parts are private and reinforces the concept of consent, especially during medical examinations.

Johnson’s TikTok thread has showcased the idea of situational awareness as well. For instance, one user advised parents to teach children to memorize what their parents are wearing, which can be crucial if they become separated in crowded places.

Dr. Felton also emphasized the dangers of drowning, describing it as “silent and below the surface.” She pointed out that drowning does not resemble the dramatic scenes often depicted in movies. Instead, it can happen quickly and without noise, making vigilance critical. To combat this, she urged caregivers to implement preventive measures, such as installing gated fences around pools and enrolling children in swim lessons.

Another noteworthy suggestion was the use of a “Water Watcher Card.” This initiative involves designating one responsible adult to supervise children in water without distractions. After a set amount of time, the card is passed to another adult, ensuring continuous active supervision.

Building Trust Through Communication

Establishing a secret code word with a child can also foster trust and provide a safe exit from uncomfortable situations. Dr. Felton explained that a secret word can signal to a parent that a child needs help without causing embarrassment. This approach can empower children to decline invitations or requests that make them uncomfortable.

Dr. Felton proposed replacing traditional curfews with a “leave time,” which encourages teens to depart before a set hour. For example, if the leave time is set at 9:30 p.m., it allows for a more manageable transition home without the pressure of a strict deadline.

The engaging exchange on TikTok reflects a growing community of parents eager to share knowledge and support one another in the complex task of child safety. With the insights shared by Johnson and others, it is clear that parents are committed to finding innovative ways to protect their children in an ever-changing world.
