Wintry Mix Slams Maine: Messy Commute and School Closures

UPDATE: A significant wintry mix has struck Maine overnight, creating hazardous conditions for commuters and leading to widespread school closures this morning. According to the Maine Turnpike Authority, speeds on the entire Maine Turnpike have been slashed to 45 mph due to snow and ice accumulation.

Several school districts, including Biddeford, Brunswick, Gorham, Lewiston, and Portland, are closed as a result of the treacherous weather. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution, as the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory affecting much of the state.

The advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. today for south central and southwest Maine, as well as interior Cumberland County. Residents in these areas can expect 2 to 3 inches of snow accumulation, which is likely to lead to icy roads and difficult travel conditions.

In addition, the Caribou office of the National Weather Service warns that parts of Hancock, Washington, and Penobscot counties will face mixed precipitation and below-freezing temperatures until 3 p.m. today. This includes the potential for freezing rain, which could significantly worsen road conditions throughout the day.

“Drivers should prepare for slippery roads and allow extra time for travel,”

stated a spokesperson from the National Weather Service.

The wintry conditions have already caused disruptions, with hundreds of businesses closing their doors for the day as safety remains a top priority.

As the storm continues to develop, residents are advised to stay tuned for updates from local authorities and the National Weather Service. With conditions expected to remain treacherous throughout the morning, those planning to venture out should proceed with caution and stay informed.

Stay safe, Maine!
