A prominent drone expert has raised significant doubts about Russia’s allegations that Ukraine attempted to attack President Vladimir Putin‘s residence using drones. The expert described the alleged assault as “tactically implausible,” arguing that it does not align with Ukraine’s established drone strategies. This commentary comes in the wake of intensified claims from Moscow, which Kyiv has firmly denied.
Cameron Chell, the CEO and co-founder of Draganfly, a drone manufacturer that supplies the U.S. Department of Defense and allied military forces, including Ukraine, stated that the assertions made by Russia lack credibility. Chell described the supposed drone strike, announced on Monday, as “hard to fathom,” emphasizing that it contradicts the clever tactics typically employed by Ukrainian forces.
Russia’s accusations intensified on Tuesday, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claiming that 91 drones were intercepted while allegedly targeting Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region. This statement came shortly after earlier reports from the Russian Defense Ministry indicated that only 89 drones had been shot down across eight regions, including 18 over Novgorod. The inconsistency in these figures has raised further questions about the credibility of the claims.
Chell elaborated on the logistical challenges of such an attack, stating, “To attack Putin’s residence, you need long-range, very fast-moving drones.” He highlighted that drones would need to be launched from a much closer location, potentially inside Russia, to reach the secure facility where Putin resides. “They would have to be within about 10 kilometers — or maybe, at most, 30 kilometers — of Putin’s residence,” Chell noted.
The timing of the allegations has also drawn scrutiny. The claims emerged shortly after a positive meeting between former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida, where discussions about peace negotiations were reportedly productive. Chell argued that it would be politically unwise for Ukraine to orchestrate such an attack while engaging in diplomatic talks, stating, “They’re bold, but right in the middle of peace talks — when they need Trump on side — it makes no sense.”
Zelenskyy has categorically dismissed Russia’s claims, labeling them as fabrications intended to justify further military actions. He accused Moscow of attempting to undermine the ongoing peace talks. In response to the allegations, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov labeled Zelenskyy’s denial and skepticism from the West as “completely insane,” indicating a hardening stance from the Russian government.
Chell further emphasized that the technical execution of a nighttime drone attack would be fraught with challenges, such as GPS jamming and visibility issues, making it improbable that an attack could have occurred as described. “Apparently, the thing was at night, so that’s very difficult for machine vision or AI mapping software,” he explained.
As tensions escalate, the potential for misinterpretation and misinformation creates an increasingly complex diplomatic landscape. Following Lavrov’s remarks, Russia continues to threaten retaliation while maintaining dialogue with Washington.
