BREAKING: The Oakland Athletics have just announced a landmark moment in their history as Tyler Soderstrom officially signed an $86 million, seven-year contract, marking the richest extension in the franchise’s history. This signing ceremony took place at the future home of the A’s in Las Vegas, a significant milestone as the team prepares for their move in 2028.
This urgent development signals the A’s commitment to building a competitive roster as they transition from Oakland to Las Vegas. The deal includes a club option for an eighth season and performance bonuses that could elevate the total value to $131 million.
General Manager David Forst expressed excitement over the signing, stating, “This keeps him here with the A’s well into our time here in Las Vegas starting in 2028.” The A’s are focused on assembling a strong team, having recently completed their first season in West Sacramento, California, where they played before their upcoming relocation.
The Athletics, known for their historically tight budget, have made several key signings recently, including $60 million for designated hitter/outfielder Brent Rooker and $65.5 million for outfielder Lawrence Butler. Manager Mark Kotsay also secured an extension through 2028, indicating a strong commitment to the team’s future.
Following Soderstrom’s signing, the A’s have traded with the New York Mets for veteran second baseman Jeff McNeil, aiming to bolster their roster further. The team is coming off a season where first baseman Nick Kurtz was named AL Rookie of the Year, and shortstop Jacob Wilson finished second in the voting.
“We have a time frame that we see in front of us with this group that can be really special,” Kotsay said. “It’s my job to get us to win prior to us getting to this ballpark.”
Soderstrom, selected as the 26th overall pick in the 2020 amateur draft, had an impressive first full major league season, batting .276 with 25 home runs and 93 RBIs. His adaptability was highlighted when he successfully transitioned from first base and catcher to left field, becoming a Gold Glove finalist.
Forst emphasized the importance of locking in young talent as they prepare for their new ballpark, stating, “The idea of taking this group of young players and locking them up into a new ballpark has been something we’ve talked about for a long time.”
Soderstrom’s enthusiasm for the team’s potential is palpable. “There’s so much potential that we have,” he remarked. “Words can’t explain how excited I am to be a part of that going forward.”
As the A’s move forward, all eyes will be on their continued efforts to build a competitive team ahead of their highly anticipated relocation to Las Vegas. With Soderstrom’s signing, the groundwork is being laid for a vibrant new chapter in Athletics baseball.
