URGENT UPDATE: The Riverdale Avenue Community School (RACS) and Riverdale Avenue Middle School (RAMS) have just inaugurated a brand-new auditorium, marking a significant investment in education and creativity for the historic Brownsville community. The ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 12, 2023, drew a crowd of students, families, educators, and community partners eager to celebrate this milestone.
New York State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud, who played a crucial role in securing the funding for this project, was present to officially open the facility. Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, representing Assembly District 55, added to the excitement by participating in a special performance that showcased the auditorium’s vital role as a hub for arts and community connection.
This state-of-the-art space addresses a long-standing need for the 104-year-old campus, which has been a cornerstone in the Brownsville area. The auditorium will serve various purposes, including student performances, family gatherings, and community events, thereby expanding opportunities for engagement and creative expression among students.
Principal Arabelle Pembroke emphasized the importance of modern facilities, stating, “Fresh, new and up-to-date spaces in school are important because they send a message to students that they are cared for and valued.” Her words resonate deeply, highlighting the emotional impact such an investment has on the students and the wider community.
The auditorium is not just an architectural addition; it symbolizes a commitment to fostering a supportive educational environment. Partnership with Children, an organization dedicated to enhancing the emotional and social skills of children in New York City, has been actively involved in this initiative. They provide vital services, including mental health counseling and arts education, to over 20,000 children and families across 40 NYC public schools.
As the celebration unfolded, attendees recognized the broader implications of the new auditorium. It represents a space where students can express themselves artistically and academically, reinforcing the community’s role in nurturing the next generation. The school has long served as an anchor in Brownsville, providing not only strong academic instruction but also essential social-emotional support through embedded community-based organizations.
Looking ahead, RACS and RAMS leadership anticipate that the auditorium will significantly enhance school culture and community-centered programming. It will become a shared space for students, families, and residents to gather, celebrate, and connect, fundamentally transforming the educational experience in Brownsville.
