A baker in Livonia, Michigan, has taken significant steps to support families affected by recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Hassan Makki, the owner of Sweet 220 Bakery, has established a free food pantry within his shop to aid those facing food insecurity in the Metro Detroit area.
Makki, along with his wife Dalia, emphasized the importance of community and generosity, values that were instilled in him by his family. “One of the most beautiful things about our culture is the hospitality and giving back, and I hold that with a huge sense of pride,” he said. His upbringing, influenced by his grandparents and parents, taught him the significance of helping others, even during challenging times.
The pantry features a variety of essential items, including rice, beans, pasta, peanut butter, oats, canned goods, fruits, and vegetables. Makki personally funds these supplies, while his mother assists by gathering food donations from the community. Visitors to the bakery are welcomed to take what they need, as everything in the pantry is provided free of charge. “Everything over here is free,” Makki explained, underlining the initiative’s purpose.
Local residents have responded positively to the pantry. Teresa Morris praised the initiative, saying, “Especially with everything that’s going on with the SNAP benefits, this is just a great opportunity for people to come in and grab things that they may need.” Another patron, Jason Glaze, remarked, “A lot of local places wouldn’t even think about this,” highlighting the uniqueness of Makki’s commitment to the community.
This is not Makki’s first endeavor to support those in need. Earlier in 2023, he delivered baked goods to line workers and first responders during power outages in the area. His efforts have been recognized as part of a broader commitment to giving back to the community.
As the holiday season approaches, Makki has announced plans to adopt three families in need, providing them with holiday desserts and treats. He is focusing on single mothers, families with sick children, and others facing significant challenges. The nominations have deeply affected him, with one story about a single mother who lost her brother and is now caring for three children. “I’m still grieving, and days when I can’t sleep, it would be nice to have a sweet treat to brighten my mood for a moment,” the nomination noted.
Reading such stories resonates with Makki, who has faced his own family hardships and loss. “I’ve been through family hardship and loss, and it’s hard to read them, man,” he shared. “Especially when you go home, you know, the heat is on, the fridge is full of food.”
The food pantry at Sweet 220 Bakery operates year-round, and Makki hopes to expand its offerings with the support of the community. Families can be nominated for holiday treats through the bakery’s Instagram account, @sweet220. This initiative not only addresses immediate food needs but also fosters a sense of community and support during a challenging time for many.
