Gurjinder Singh, a 32-year-old man from Grand Rapids, was sentenced today in 62A District Court in Kent County for his involvement in an unlicensed gambling scheme at Pfeffer’s Party Store located at 1054 Burton Street SW in Wyoming.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) confirmed that Singh pleaded guilty to the charge of Gambling House Permitting for Gain. As part of his sentence, he must pay $500 in fines, fees, and court costs. This comes after investigators uncovered two illegal slot-style machines that closely resembled those found in licensed casinos, sparking concerns over consumer safety and regulatory compliance.
The investigation was initiated following multiple reports of suspicious activity at Pfeffer’s Party Store. Authorities discovered that customers could wager on these machines and redeem winnings for Visa gift cards, cleverly sidestepping detection. Regulators warn that such operations expose players to unfair odds and potential ties to criminal activity.
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams stated, “This sentencing serves as a cautionary tale for business owners considering similar actions. Unregulated gambling puts players and communities at risk.” He emphasized the importance of adhering to laws designed to protect consumers and ensure fair gaming practices.
This incident is part of a broader crackdown on illegal gambling in Michigan. In August, two individuals involved in an illegal venue dubbed “Spin to Win” were sentenced, reinforcing the message that illegal operations will face serious consequences. Williams added, “This sentencing sends a clear message that illegal gambling will not be tolerated in Michigan.”
Michigan regulators are also intensifying efforts against illegal online gambling. Earlier this year, the MGCB issued 19 cease-and-desist letters to offshore operators targeting Michigan residents without authorization.
