The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners honored the Sun City Center Emergency Squad during a commendation ceremony held on December 17, 2023. The volunteer organization was recognized for its exceptional service and dedication to the community, which has been unwavering since its establishment in 1964. Chief Mike Bardell accepted the commendation on behalf of the squad, as reported by the Hillsborough County Newsroom.
The Sun City Center Emergency Squad, comprised entirely of volunteers, has been responding to emergencies and providing vital community support services. Their efforts include offering free CPR training and disaster planning, demonstrating a commitment to not only respond in crises but also to prevent them. With an impressive annual call volume approaching 4,000 ambulance requests, their impact on the community is profound.
A Legacy of Service and Recognition
Recently, the squad received the prestigious EMS World/NAEMT 2025 Volunteer EMS Service of the Year Award. This accolade underscores the importance of their mission and the dedication of their volunteers. Despite an average age of 70, the squad’s 370 volunteers exemplify that age is no barrier to service or heroism. Chief Bardell, reflecting the spirit of the squad, stated, “The truth is, the true heroes are the 370 volunteers.” He further emphasized, “Just because we’re retired doesn’t mean we’re done.”
In addition to recognizing the Sun City Center Emergency Squad, the Board of County Commissioners also commended another community figure during the same meeting. Andrew Emerton, founder of Breathe Florida, was acknowledged for his significant contributions through his nonprofit organization. Breathe Florida focuses on equipping high school students with life-saving skills by providing free CPR certification, facilitated in partnership with the American Heart Association.
Community Impact Through Education and Service
Both the Sun City Center Emergency Squad and Breathe Florida highlight the importance of community engagement and education in emergency preparedness. The squad’s initiatives not only address immediate needs but also foster a culture of prevention and awareness. Emerton’s work further complements these efforts by empowering the next generation with essential life-saving knowledge.
The commendation ceremony serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by volunteers in the community. Their unwavering commitment to service ensures that residents of Hillsborough County are supported in times of need, creating a resilient and informed community.
