Albany City to Decide Brewery’s Future in January Amid Urgency

URGENT UPDATE: The future of the former Pretoria Fields Brewing facility in downtown Albany is set to be determined by the Albany City Commission in January 2024. City officials are racing against time to finalize the deal that will allow the city to take control of the brewery, which has been closed since late 2024 following a foreclosure by the primary lender.

As of now, Albany City Manager Terrell Jacobs indicated that the city expects to complete the acquisition in the coming days. “We’re in the final stages of securing the primary interest,” Jacobs stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

In January, commissioners will face a critical decision: accept the current bid from Socius Beer Collective, which has expressed interest in reviving the brewery, or explore new proposals. Commissioner Chad Warbington noted, “If we rebid, it could be another year. They’re ready to go. If we can vote on this in January, I guarantee you they could be here in March and have the brewery back open.”

The bid from Socius Beer Collective, led by COO John Reynolds, includes plans to introduce a food element to the taproom, which Warbington believes is essential for its success. “Regular food offerings would make the brewery a destination for families,” he explained. While the previous model focused solely on brewing and distribution, the new approach emphasizes community engagement through food and events.

Mayor Bo Dorough has also signaled his support for reconsidering the bid, stating he “absolutely” would consider giving Pretoria Fields another chance. He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic played a significant role in the previous brewery’s closure, which had been a vibrant part of the downtown scene, hosting events like Bingo and trivia nights.

In order to secure ownership of the property, Albany must first finalize its position on the foreclosed loans, which amount to about $1.2 million for construction and equipment costs. Dorough stressed the importance of resolving ownership before soliciting new bids, as other potential investors may have been deterred by the foreclosure status.

As the city prepares for this pivotal moment, the urgency for a decision looms large. The decision in January could pave the way for a quick reopening of the brewery, revitalizing downtown Albany and bringing back community activities that had been lost.

Officials are urging residents to stay tuned for updates as the situation develops. The outcome of this decision is not just about a brewery; it’s about restoring a vital part of the community fabric in Albany.
