The Global Chess League (GCL), a collaboration between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to revolutionize chess broadcasting. This collaboration aims to enhance the viewing experience for fans as the league prepares for its third season in Mumbai from December 13 to 24, 2025.
Utilizing AWS’s advanced cloud capabilities, GCL will introduce a range of features designed to enrich the broadcasting experience. Fans can expect real-time game updates, live commentary infused with deeper insights, multilingual coverage, and interactive fan zones. The integration of AI technology will enable enhanced analysis and engagement, offering viewers a more personalized experience that connects them more closely with the sport.
Innovative Broadcasting Solutions
The upcoming season will take place at the historic Royal Opera House in Mumbai, marking a significant step for GCL as it continues to promote inclusivity in chess through its unique joint format featuring both male and female players. Leveraging AWS’s cloud-native infrastructure, GCL plans to provide immersive and globally scalable broadcasts, pushing boundaries beyond traditional broadcasting methods.
To support its ambitious broadcasting strategy, GCL will utilize various AWS services, including AWS Elemental MediaLive, Amazon SageMaker, and Amazon CloudFront. These tools will facilitate secure, reliable, and low-latency video transport and encoding, transforming how chess is presented to audiences worldwide.
Peeyush Dubey, Chairperson of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Every move in chess is about foresight, precision, and timing, and those same principles guide how we run this league.” He added that working with AWS allows GCL to develop a broadcasting framework that reflects the game’s intelligence.
Expanding Fan Engagement
As chess continues to evolve into a technology-driven global sport, this partnership positions GCL at the crossroads of culture and competition. Season 3 will feature new broadcast formats and fan engagement initiatives, including the GCL Creators, GCL SuperFans, and Road to GCL programs, along with the GCL Contenders program on Chess.com. These initiatives aim to deepen fan involvement and broaden access to the league.
Praveen Sridhar, Head of Partner Business for AWS India and South Asia, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “The Global Chess League represents a fusion of tradition and innovation.” He emphasized that AWS is committed to delivering a smarter, more connected broadcast experience that brings fans closer to the game than ever before.
The league’s mixed-team format will feature top global players, including men, women, and young prodigies, competing in a double round-robin format. This unique approach blends individual brilliance with team strategy, providing a captivating spectacle for chess enthusiasts.
