A chilling new horror film titled Mother of Flies is set to premiere on the streaming platform Shudder on January 23, 2026. The film, created by the independent filmmaking family known as the Adams Family, dives into themes of life, death, and the darkness that can arise when one attempts to defy fate. An exclusive first look at the trailer has generated significant buzz within the horror community.
In Mother of Flies, a character named Mickey faces a terminal diagnosis, which prompts her to seek the help of a local witch named Solveig. Despite her father Jake’s initial skepticism, he ultimately decides to support his daughter’s desperate quest for survival. The trailer reveals a series of gruesome and horrific rituals that Solveig imposes on the pair, emphasizing the unsettling notion that “to rule death, one must love it…lie with it.” The visuals include unsettling imagery such as writhing maggots and desiccated corpses, suggesting that the cure might be more horrific than the affliction itself.
The film is a collaborative effort from John Adams, Zelda Adams, and Toby Poser, who share writing and directing credits. Poser also produced the film, while John took on roles as both editor and director of photography. The cast features familiar faces like Lulu Adams, James Lindsay, Noble Wilson-Eiden, and Jessica Beveridge. Additionally, the soundtrack is provided by the family’s band, H6LLB6ND6R, further showcasing their artistic unity.
The Adams Family is not to be confused with the fictional characters of Gomez and Morticia. This creative family consists of self-taught filmmakers whose previous work includes the critically acclaimed Hellbender, which premiered in 2021. Filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic at their home, Hellbender tells the story of a mother-daughter duo living an isolated life in the woods. The film was praised for its haunting narrative and became a sleeper hit on Shudder.
They also have other notable works such as The Deeper You Dig and Where The Devil Roams. Mother of Flies premiered at Fantastic Fest last summer, where it received enthusiastic reviews from critics and currently boasts a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As the anticipation builds for its release, Mother of Flies promises to deliver a gripping horror experience that examines the lengths one might go to in the face of death. For audiences looking for a compelling narrative steeped in psychological terror, this film is poised to make a significant impact in the genre. Stay tuned for updates as the release date approaches.
