Alfred Garr Jones, Esteemed Craftsman and Community Volunteer, Dies at 81

Alfred Garr Jones, a respected craftsman and devoted community member, passed away at the age of 81 on December 7, 2025. A lifelong resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, Jones was celebrated not only for his expertise in wallpapering but also for his vibrant personality and commitment to service.

Jones began his career after graduating from Princess Anne High School, where he showcased his musical talents by playing the trumpet and performing with the Madrigal Singers. Following high school, he completed a trade apprenticeship with E. Calagari & Sons. For over fifty years, he was renowned for his skills in wallpapering, lending his talents to both residential and commercial projects across Virginia and beyond. His reputation was such that he would often travel out of state at the request of private clients and interior decorators.

Throughout his life, Jones demonstrated a strong work ethic and a dedication to community service. He volunteered as a police officer with the Chesapeake Auxiliary Police Unit during the 1970s and 1980s. His commitment to public safety was matched by his passion for music. Jones was an active member of several musical groups, including the Commodore Chorus and the Virginia Beach Chorale, where he continued to perform traditional and barbershop music.

Jones was also known for his warm spirit and camaraderie, especially during his decade-long tenure at Cavalier Mazda, where he built lasting friendships. His faith was an important aspect of his life, and he was a dedicated member of the Woodland Heights Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Amy Jones Edwards and her husband Larry, a son, Greg S. Jones and his wife Emily, as well as grandchildren Marley and Cameron Jones. Additionally, he leaves behind his siblings, Shirley Jones Olha, Betty Jones Hurni, and Paul E. Jones. He was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Layden Jones, his wife, Jean A. Jones, and brothers J. Wesley Jones and Andrew L. Jones.

A funeral service will take place at Oman Funeral Home on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 14:00 local time. A private interment will follow the service. Friends and family are encouraged to honor his memory with flowers or by planting a living memorial in his name.
