Richard “Shane” Early, a beloved community member known for his warmth and humor, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025. He is remembered for his distinctive southern voice, infectious laughter, and generous spirit that touched the lives of many throughout his journey.
Shane was born on May 22, 2019, in Rich Square, North Carolina, where he was raised by his grandparents and his cherished Aunt Josephine. His childhood was marked by a lively personality and a sense of adventure that kept his small town entertained.
In his adulthood, Shane married his devoted wife, Merle Early, and together they settled in the Tidewater area of Virginia. The couple raised two children, Franklin Shane and Wendy Jo, instilling in them the same love and generosity that defined Shane’s character. For over thirty-two years, they successfully operated a safety equipment business, a testament to their hard work and commitment.
Shane’s passion for life was evident in his love for surf fishing with family and friends in Buxton, North Carolina, where their family cottage remains a cherished location. He was also known for his extensive collection of vintage and antique items, reflecting his appreciation for history and craftsmanship. Travel was another significant part of Shane’s life, with many memorable trips taken alongside his wife.
Tragically, Shane is predeceased by his mother, Mary Louise Shearin, and father, “JT” Early. He also mourns the loss of his brothers, Fred Shearin and Billy Early, and his beloved granddaughter, Jennifer. Despite these losses, Shane is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brothers, Al Shearin and John Early, his sister, Alice Leach, and his cousin, Leslie Brouillard, who was like a brother to him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital for their compassionate care during Shane’s final days.
