Bananas Wash Ashore in West Sussex After Shipping Incident

A shipping incident off the coast of England has led to multiple containers of bananas washing up on beaches in West Sussex. This unusual occurrence began on November 25, 2023, when the refrigerated cargo ship Baltic Klipper lost 16 containers while navigating the Solent, the strait between the Isle of Wight and the British mainland. The situation has prompted authorities to advise the public to avoid the area as clean-up efforts commence.

HM Coastguard issued an initial warning advising that any items found must be reported to the receiver of wreck. This government role, dating back to historical piracy, typically requires reporting of all wrecked material. However, on November 27, the receiver clarified that due to the perishable nature of the bananas, reporting was not necessary in this case.

Despite the clarification, West Sussex County Council has urged residents and visitors to stay away from the affected beaches. The council emphasized that they need space and time to safely remove the containers and their contents. “Do not approach the containers; they may be hazardous. Please avoid the area. Allow us to make the site safe,” the council stated.

The incident has had wider implications, causing disruptions in local shipping movements. The cruise ship P&O Cruises Iona experienced delays in its departure from Southampton due to the fallen containers. Among the lost cargo, eight containers carried bananas, while others contained plantains and avocados. Five containers washed ashore at Selsey, with some opening and allowing the bananas to scatter onto the beach.

Local emergency services, including the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police, have cordoned off the area to prevent public access. The coastguard has deployed helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to locate the remaining containers still at sea.

The bananas, believed to have been destined for UK supermarkets, were reportedly branded with Tesco labels. In response to the incident, Tesco reassured customers that there is no need for concern, stating they maintain a good supply of bananas both in-store and online.

This incident echoes a previous event in 2007 when containers from the cargo ship MSC Napoli washed ashore, leading to a public scavenging frenzy. However, this time, the receiver of wreck, former police detective Steve White, has stated that his office will not be involved due to the perishable nature of the cargo.

The Baltic Klipper had recently loaded its fruit cargo in South America and made stops in Mexico and the Netherlands before heading to Portsmouth, where the containers reportedly slipped off just before reaching the port. The coastguard’s ongoing search aims to ensure no additional hazardous materials remain at sea.

As clean-up efforts continue, authorities maintain a focus on public safety and the swift resolution of this unusual maritime mishap.
