UPDATE: Dash Fifita, the 5-foot-9 linebacker for Santa Margarita High, is set to showcase his incredible skills in the CIF Open Division state championship against unbeaten Concord De La Salle this Saturday at 8 p.m. at Saddleback College. With a remarkable season behind him, Fifita has become a standout player, proving that size doesn’t dictate success on the football field.
Fifita has been a revelation, consistently outmaneuvering larger opponents and leading his team with an impressive 95 tackles, along with 5.5 sacks and an interception this season. “I have the best defensive line in the nation, and it makes my job easy,” he stated, underscoring the strength of his supporting teammates.
Coaching legend Troy Thomas, who has witnessed the Fifita family’s dedication firsthand, highlighted the deep familial inspiration driving Dash’s performance. “Family is a huge part of their inspiration. They’re playing for their teammates, for God. He puts his body on the line to represent his family and team,” Thomas said.
Dash’s brother, Noah Fifita, a college quarterback at Arizona, serves as a significant role model for him. Their father, Les, plays a pivotal role in the local youth football organization, OC Buckeyes, while their uncle, Steve, is the defensive coordinator for Santa Margarita. This family connection fuels Dash’s determination on the field.
The Eagles enter the championship game boasting the best defensive unit in Southern California. Dash’s instincts and tenacity, likened to that of an eagle, allow him to anticipate plays and react swiftly. St. John Bosco’s defensive coordinator, Chris King, praised him as “super-intelligent” and noted his relentless effort and coaching prowess on the field.
As Dash prepares to face De La Salle, anticipation is building among family and fans. More than 50 relatives are expected to fill the stands, ready to cheer him on as he aims to further cement his legacy. “There’s tons of cousins, and they come out and support,” Thomas added.
Fifita recently signed with Arizona, joining his brother in Tucson, highlighting the family’s journey of overcoming doubts about their size in a sport often dominated by larger athletes. “It’s harder for quarterbacks than for linebackers,” Thomas explained, emphasizing the unique challenges both brothers face.
As the clock ticks down to game time, the excitement surrounding Dash Fifita and the Santa Margarita Eagles is palpable. Fans and family will gather at Saddleback College, ready to rally behind a player who has proven that heart and skill outweigh size on the football field. This championship is not just a game; it’s a testament to resilience, family, and the relentless pursuit of excellence in sports.
