The Chamberlain Group has introduced a new version of its communication platform, Security+ 3.0, which significantly restricts smart home integrations for its garage door openers. This update effectively disables previous workarounds developed by third-party accessory manufacturers like Tailwind, Meross, and Ratgdo, which allowed users to connect their garage doors with popular ecosystems such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. Instead, users are now directed to Chamberlain’s MyQ app, which features a limited selection of integrations, predominantly requiring subscription fees.
With this move, Chamberlain is reinforcing its proprietary ecosystem, minimizing interoperability within the smart home market. The company’s decision follows its departure from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the organization behind the interoperability standard known as Matter, which recently announced support for garage door controllers.
The introduction of the original MyQ Garage in 2014 marked Chamberlain’s entry into smart home technology. This accessory enabled users to control their garage doors remotely, a significant advancement for homeowners. Over the years, Chamberlain has integrated MyQ directly into its newer openers, creating a broader ecosystem that includes security cameras and doorbells.
However, competitors soon emerged, offering universal controllers that could interface with Chamberlain’s products. Yet, with the development of the Security+ 2.0 technology, these aftermarket devices faced compatibility issues. Companies like Ratgdo, founded by Paul Wieland, created innovative solutions to bypass these limitations, allowing users more flexibility in controlling their garage door openers.
Chamberlain’s transition to Security+ 3.0 represents a more aggressive approach to its proprietary technology. According to Christina Marenson, senior manager of marketing and PR at Chamberlain Group, the focus remains on delivering a secure experience, which necessitates restricting third-party integrations. This shift has effectively eliminated the functionality of existing aftermarket controllers.
In an interview with The Verge, Scott Riesebosch, president of Tailwind, confirmed that the new Security+ 3.0 devices will not work with any aftermarket controllers. “Any aftermarket controller, such as Ratgdo, Tailwind, or Meross, will not function with Security+ 3.0 devices,” he stated.
Chamberlain’s strategy appears to be geared towards fostering a more controlled user environment, offering paid integrations mainly with security companies like Alarm.com and Vivint, while steering clear of major smart home ecosystems. The MyQ app remains free for basic garage door control, but the experience is marred by advertisements and upselling for additional services.
One of the more controversial aspects of Security+ 3.0 is its cloud-based authentication system, designed to prevent counterfeit accessories from connecting to the openers. Marenson explained that this measure was implemented in response to a rise in counterfeit products that do not meet Chamberlain’s security standards.
While the MyQ app may suffice for many users, there is a growing demand for compatibility across various smart home platforms. Despite Chamberlain’s substantial market share of over 70 percent in the U.S., users are increasingly seeking alternatives. Some competitors, such as Genie with its Aladdin connectivity platform, are noted for their more open approach.
Chamberlain’s new hardware also boasts features like specific remotes and keypads that can be assigned to individuals, enhancing tracking of garage door activity. The shift to fully wireless communication signifies a departure from previous wired connections, complicating any potential integration efforts from third-party manufacturers.
As consumers navigate this landscape, innovative solutions like Third Reality’s $50 smart garage door controller offer a promising alternative. This device provides comprehensive smart home compatibility, supporting major platforms without the restrictions imposed by Chamberlain’s ecosystem.
