UPDATE: A civil lawsuit against UFC star Conor McGregor alleging sexual assault has been dropped. The plaintiff, a 49-year-old business executive, voluntarily filed for dismissal in a U.S. District Court on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. This sudden development raises significant questions about the allegations first made public earlier this year.
The lawsuit accused McGregor of sexually assaulting the woman in a bathroom during a Miami Heat game at the Kaseya Center in June 2023. The plaintiff filed the civil suit against McGregor and the Miami Heat on January 14, 2023. However, the Florida State Attorney’s Office chose not to pursue criminal charges in this matter, leaving the civil case as the primary avenue for the plaintiff.
On Tuesday, the woman submitted a notice of voluntary dismissal with prejudice, which means no further legal action can be taken regarding this incident. McGregor, who is 37 years old, has consistently denied all accusations against him.
According to the initial claims, the two met in the Courtside Club at the Kaseya Center before McGregor allegedly grabbed the woman’s hand and took her to the men’s restroom where the incident purportedly occurred.
This lawsuit is not McGregor’s first legal battle involving allegations of sexual misconduct. In a separate case from 2018 in Ireland, he was found liable for sexual assault and ordered to pay €248,000 (approximately $257,000) to the victim. McGregor’s appeal against that verdict was denied.
The UFC fighter has been inactive since suffering a broken leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. He has expressed a desire to make a comeback, aiming for a spot on the UFC’s White House card scheduled for June 2024.
As this story develops, the implications for McGregor’s career and public image remain uncertain. The abrupt dismissal of the lawsuit could impact his return to the octagon and the ongoing conversations about accountability in sports.
