The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned goaltender Laurent Brossoit to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League (AHL) for a conditioning assignment. This decision was announced on Tuesday as Brossoit continues his recovery from offseason hip surgery.
At 32 years old, Brossoit has faced significant challenges in recent seasons. He missed the entirety of the previous season due to a meniscus operation on his right knee. His return to competitive play is critical not only for his career but also for the Blackhawks, who currently have Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom in net. Brossoit’s performance during this conditioning stint could potentially make him a trade target for teams seeking goaltending depth.
Brossoit signed a $6.6 million two-year contract with the Blackhawks on July 1, 2024. His last active season was with the Winnipeg Jets during the 2023-24 period, where he demonstrated his skill by appearing in 23 games. In that season, he achieved a record of 15-5-2, with a notable 2.00 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.
A sixth-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, Brossoit has accumulated a career record of 64 wins, 46 losses, and 13 overtime losses in 140 games. His overall statistics include a goals-against average of 2.64 and a save percentage of .911. Throughout his career, Brossoit has played for the Edmonton Oilers, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Jets.
The Blackhawks will monitor Brossoit’s progress closely during his time in Rockford, as they look to build a competitive roster for the upcoming season. With the current goaltending landscape, Brossoit’s recovery and performance could have significant implications for both his future and the team’s strategy moving forward.
