A woman has been charged with a unique violation of railway byelaws for allegedly walking the “wrong way” on an escalator at a London train station. Michaela Copeland, 32, faced the court after an incident that took place on the TFL regional railway network in Greenwich on November 27, 2023.
According to court documents, Copeland is accused of “using or attempting to use an escalator other than by standing or walking on it in the direction intended for travel.” The specifics of the incident remain unclear; it has not been disclosed whether she was attempting to ascend a descending escalator or descend an ascending one.
Potential Penalties and Court Proceedings
Walking against the intended direction on an escalator is prohibited under railway regulations. Those found in violation can face fines of up to $1,300. Copeland appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on November 28, where she pleaded not guilty to the charge.
During her court appearance, Copeland was seen using crutches, although it has not been revealed whether her condition played a role in the incident. A trial has been scheduled for April 2024, with an estimated duration of three hours.
