The Denver Broncos achieved a thrilling 27-26 overtime victory against the Washington Commanders on December 1, 2025, improving their season record to 10-2. Despite this impressive performance, former two-time Super Bowl champion Damien Woody remains skeptical about the team’s championship credentials, particularly due to the inconsistencies of quarterback Bo Nix.
This latest win marks the Broncos’ ninth consecutive victory, a remarkable turnaround after they began the season with a 1-2 record. Their recent success has propelled them to the top of the AFC, making them a serious contender for the Super Bowl. Notably, seven of these nine wins have come by a margin of one score, highlighting the team’s ability to perform under pressure. The Broncos currently hold an overall one-score record of 8-2 this season.
Despite the team’s strong showing, Nix has faced criticism for his performance. With a total of 19 touchdown passes and 2,742 yards, his statistics fall short compared to his rookie season, with significant drops in both completion percentage and quarterback rating (QBR). His inconsistency has raised doubts about his ability to lead the team in high-stakes situations.
Woody expressed his concerns regarding Nix’s performance during an appearance on the program Get Up, stating, “No, they’re not [the best team in the AFC] because I don’t trust the quarterback. We know how great the defense is in Denver. They can rush the passer, all those types of things.”
While the Broncos’ defense has garnered widespread acclaim, even breaking historical records, Woody’s focus remains on Nix. The defense ranks first in several key areas, including red zone defense and third-down defense. They are also on track to potentially set a new record for team sacks in a season.
In his remarks, Woody likened Nix’s performance to a roller coaster ride, saying, “You’re going to get some great moments from Bo Nix. You’re also going to get some head-scratching moments from Bo Nix. I think if he’s more consistent, then I can absolutely say yes. But until then, I’m still a big question mark on Denver.”
Despite the skepticism, Nix has managed to lead the team effectively, particularly in clutch situations. This season marks his second as a starting quarterback, and the expectation of inconsistency is common for players at this stage of their careers. Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton has acknowledged Nix’s development, stating, “He’s just getting better and better, and we’re operating better.”
The Broncos’ impressive run is largely attributed to their defense, which is poised to be recognized among the greatest in NFL history. Yet, Nix and the team will face significant tests in the final five games of the season, with four matchups against playoff contenders or teams vying for a playoff spot.
To solidify their status as the team to beat in the league, the Broncos must maintain their winning momentum. As the playoffs approach, all eyes will be on how both Nix and the defense perform in these critical matchups.
