A new Netflix drama, titled Steve, showcases the work of legendary British photojournalist Sir Don McCullin, who has provided exclusive behind-the-scenes imagery of the film. Directed by Tim Mielants and adapted from Max Porter’s bestselling novel Shy, this production explores a transformative day in the life of headteacher Steve, played by Cillian Murphy, as he strives to uphold the integrity of a struggling reform school.
Set against the backdrop of an impending school closure, Steve delves into themes of mental health and resilience. The narrative not only follows Murphy’s character but also introduces Shy, portrayed by Jay Lycurgo, who faces his own challenges as he navigates the delicate balance between his tumultuous past and a hopeful future. The cast also features prominent actors such as Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson, contributing to a rich ensemble.
McCullin, renowned for his impactful photography from historical conflicts including the Vietnam War and the Troubles, has a limited film portfolio, with notable works such as Blow-Up (1966) and Black Hawk Down (2001). At 90 years old, he has expressed that Steve will be his final film project. Over several days, he documented the production, capturing unique reportage-style images that reflect his distinguished career.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before its streaming release on October 3, 2023. Murphy, fresh off his acclaimed performance in Oppenheimer, shared insights about his transition to this project, stating, “As soon as I finished the Oppenheimer awards run, we went straight into Steve. It wasn’t strategic on my part.” He emphasized the personal connection to the stories, noting, “They were written by friends, and since we had a production company, we were able to get them made.”
Critics have praised Steve for its emotional depth, with David Rooney, chief film critic for The Hollywood Reporter, describing it as “deeply moving.” He highlighted the balance of humor and poignant moments that provide relief amid the film’s intense social realism.
In related news, in 2020, actress and director Angelina Jolie was announced to direct a biopic titled Unreasonable Behaviour, based on McCullin’s acclaimed autobiography. This project aims to shed light on the life and work of this influential photographer.
As Steve makes its way into homes worldwide via Netflix, audiences can anticipate a compelling narrative that not only entertains but also inspires reflection on critical social issues.
