Andrew Terraciano, who portrayed Sean Reagan on CBS’s long-running series Blue Bloods, has been recast in the new spinoff series Boston Blue. The change, which has drawn attention from fans, comes as the series transitions into a new narrative direction. The spinoff premiered in October 2024 with Mika Amonsen stepping into the role of Sean Reagan, which previously showcased Terraciano’s performance for over a decade.
Terraciano, now 22, began his acting career on Blue Bloods in 2010 and appeared in nearly 300 episodes until the series concluded in 2024. His character, Sean, was notably a fixture at the Reagan family dinner table and shared the screen with his brother, Tony Terraciano, who played Jack Reagan, Donnie Wahlberg’s eldest son. Despite his popularity, the creators of Boston Blue decided to take the character in a new direction, prompting the recasting.
Creators Explain the Recasting Decision
According to Brandon Margolis, the creator of Boston Blue, the decision to recast was driven by a desire to explore a new chapter in the lives of the characters. “We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on Blue Bloods. Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives,” Margolis stated in an interview with Variety. He emphasized the need for fresh energy and storytelling avenues, noting the organic opportunity for a new performance that aligns with the evolving narrative.
Margolis continued, “It is the same character, it’s the same relationship, but it’s also completely different.” This shift aims to showcase Sean not only as part of the Reagan family but also as an emerging figure in law enforcement, marking a significant transition for the character.
Mika Amonsen Steps into Sean Reagan’s Role
Mika Amonsen expressed the pressure she felt stepping into Terraciano’s role, acknowledging the need to honor his portrayal. “I definitely felt a ton of pressure at first. I felt the pressure to respect an actor before me because I wanted to respect Andrew the best I could,” Amonsen remarked. She made deliberate choices in her performance, maintaining certain aspects of the character’s presentation, such as hair styling, to pay tribute to the version that fans have come to love.
While Amonsen had limited time to prepare for the role, she dedicated herself to understanding Sean’s character by binge-watching later seasons of Blue Bloods to capture his development into adulthood. “I really wanted to get a sense of his character at that point into adulthood and his relationship with Danny,” she shared.
Despite the transition, Amonsen aims to incorporate her unique energy into the character. “Watching Andrew’s performance, I actually noticed a lot of similarities just between us as people, and our energy. It’s quite upbeat,” she noted. This connection has allowed her to remain authentic while crafting her interpretation of Sean Reagan.
Amonsen concluded by emphasizing the exploration of the father-son dynamic in a new light. “We’re really just exploring what would have been. Of course, it is my own version of it but at the same time we haven’t seen this relationship with Sean and his dad before,” she explained, highlighting the fresh narrative possibilities that Boston Blue intends to explore.
While Andrew Terraciano has yet to comment publicly on the recasting, he continues to acknowledge his role in Blue Bloods on social media. His Instagram bio still references his time on the show, and after a brief hiatus from social media, he has returned to share moments with friends and fans alike.
Boston Blue airs on CBS on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET, marking a new chapter for the franchise and its characters as they navigate the complexities of family and law enforcement.
