A remarkable incident unfolded at the Sprinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when Jonathan Marlowe and his friends spotted a small hammerhead shark in the woods. While playing at hole 11, they witnessed an osprey carrying the unusual catch in its talons. This encounter left the group astonished and raised questions about how a shark ended up far from the ocean.
The moment occurred when Marlowe and his friends noticed the osprey, a bird known for its fishing prowess. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, these birds can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour while diving from heights of up to 100 feet to catch their prey. However, the osprey’s catch this time was a small hammerhead shark, which was already dead when it fell to the ground during a tussle with two crows.
Marlowe recounted the surprising scene, stating, “It’s not unusual to see an osprey carrying something, but take note because it’s still really cool to see it.” He and his friends initially believed the osprey had dropped a fish. The sight of a hammerhead shark, however, certainly changed their expectations.
While encounters with wildlife are common on golf courses, a hammerhead shark is an extraordinary find. Marlowe expressed disbelief, saying, “We couldn’t believe it and kept asking ourselves, ‘Did that really just happen?’” He speculated that the osprey may have been hunting around the nearby Springmaid Pier, which could explain its catch.
After the unusual discovery, Marlowe and his friends decided to leave the shark under the tree where it had fallen, hoping the osprey might return for it. The incident drew further attention when Marlowe shared photos on his Facebook profile. A fellow golfer commented that they had also found the dead shark, adding to the surreal nature of the situation.
“They were standing there in shock with no frame of reference for what might have happened,” Marlowe noted. “But then they saw the post and said, ‘Thank God, because how do you explain a hammerhead randomly in the forest?’”
This unexpected encounter highlights the intersection of nature and recreation, illustrating the surprises that can occur in natural settings.
