Eagles Struggle in Week 13, Defense Falters Against Bears

The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a disappointing defeat on December 1, 2023, losing to the Chicago Bears 24-15. This marked the Eagles’ second consecutive loss, bringing their record to 8-4. The team, which was once vying for the top seed in the NFC, now finds itself struggling to maintain momentum as the playoffs approach.

The Eagles’ offensive performance was lackluster, with extended periods of inactivity that hindered their chances of staying competitive. Quarterback Jalen Hurts faced challenges both in the air and on the ground, fumbling the ball and throwing an interception. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ defense, which had shown promise earlier in the season, failed to effectively stop the Bears’ rushing attack, allowing them to control the game clock significantly.

Defensive Highlights and Weaknesses

Despite the overall disappointing performance, there were some bright spots for the Eagles. The pass rush exhibited strength, with players like Jaelan Phillips making impactful plays. The Eagles’ defensive line managed to tip three passes during the game, with two of those credited to rookie Jalen Carter, who also secured a sack. The Eagles’ defense pressured Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who completed only 17 of his 36 pass attempts. The defensive line’s ability to disrupt Williams contributed to the Bears’ struggles in the passing game.

However, the Eagles’ run defense proved to be a significant liability. Entering the matchup, Philadelphia’s run defense was ranked 18th, allowing an average of 115.1 rushing yards per game. Against the Bears, the Eagles allowed a staggering 282 rushing yards, with Chicago reaching the 100-yard mark just 18 minutes into the game. The Bears’ dual-threat running backs, D’Andre Swift and rookie Kyle Monangai, combined for over 200 yards and both scored touchdowns. This marked the first instance in 20 years that an Eagles defense allowed two opposing players to rush for over 100 yards in the same game.

Looking Ahead

With only a few days before their next game against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Eagles have an opportunity to regroup. The extra rest could serve them well as they seek to address their defensive issues and revitalize their offense. The team’s ability to bounce back will be critical as they aim to reclaim their position in the NFC playoff race.

The Eagles’ performance in Week 13 raises concerns about their defensive capabilities and offensive consistency. As they prepare for their upcoming match, the coaching staff must find solutions to rectify the vulnerabilities exposed by the Bears. The next game will be crucial for the Eagles, who need to demonstrate resilience and reclaim their competitive edge.
