The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to issue advance payments on December 1, 2025, impacting approximately 7.5 million beneficiaries across the United States. This payment marks the last check for the year for recipients of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is intended for individuals with low income, those aged over 65, or individuals with disabilities.
Beneficiaries will receive two payments in December. The first will be on December 1 for December’s SSI benefits, while a second payment will occur on December 31, covering the first day of January 2026. This adjustment is made due to New Year’s Day falling on a federal holiday, necessitating an earlier disbursement of funds.
Payment Details and Upcoming Increases
The average monthly payment for SSI recipients stands at $717.84, although this amount can vary depending on individual circumstances. Individuals may receive a maximum of $967, while couples could receive up to $1,450 monthly. Notably, these amounts will see a 2.8% increase starting with the first payment in 2026, reflecting the latest Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).
According to the SSA, the SSI program currently supports 7.406 million beneficiaries. Unlike other Social Security programs, SSI eligibility is based on financial need rather than tax contributions. This program plays a crucial role in assisting older adults, individuals with disabilities, and those with limited resources.
December Payment Schedule and Methods
The remaining payments for other Social Security benefits will be distributed according to a schedule based on beneficiaries’ birth dates. Those born between the 1st and 10th of the month will receive their payments on December 10, while those born between the 11th and 20th will be paid on December 17. For beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st, payments will be made on December 24.
Beneficiaries who have been receiving payments since before May 1997 will not follow this schedule; instead, they will receive their payments on December 3. For individuals receiving SSI alongside retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or survivor benefits, the payment for SSI will be made on December 1, with the other benefits paid on December 3.
The SSA provides various options for beneficiaries to receive their payments, including direct deposits into bank accounts and special debit cards known as Direct Express cards. These methods facilitate easier access to funds, and beneficiaries can manage their preferences through the SSA’s online portal, “My Social Security.”
As the end of the year approaches, these advance payments are crucial for many Americans, aiding them in managing their financial needs during the holiday season and beyond. For detailed information on payment schedules and methods, beneficiaries are encouraged to consult the SSA’s official resources.
