Emma Heming Willis has opened up about how her family navigates the holiday season as her husband, Bruce Willis, faces the challenges of dementia. In an interview with People, published on November 27, 2023, Heming Willis discussed the adaptations her family has made to continue celebrating special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The model emphasized the importance of maintaining joy during the holidays, stating, “Bruce loved Christmas, and we love celebrating it with him. It just looks different, so we’ve kind of adapted to that.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding of how families cope with significant changes caused by health issues.
Heming Willis attended the End Well 2025 conference in Los Angeles last week, where she elaborated on her family’s approach to creating new memories while holding onto cherished traditions. “You have to learn and adapt,” she explained, adding, “Life goes on. It just goes on. Dementia is hard, but there is still joy in it.” She stressed that it is essential not to view dementia solely through a negative lens, noting, “We are still laughing. There is still joy. It just looks different.”
Bruce Willis was diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder, in March 2022. By early 2023, his family announced that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia, a serious brain disease affecting communication, behavior, and mobility. In a recent update, Bruce’s daughter, Rumer Willis, 37, shared insights about her father’s health on Instagram during a Q&A session.
Rumer acknowledged the difficulty of discussing her father’s condition, stating, “The truth is that anybody with FTD is not doing great. But he’s doing OK in terms of somebody who’s dealing with frontotemporal dementia.” She expressed gratitude for the moments they share, regardless of his recognition of her. “I’m so grateful that when I go over there and I give him a hug, whether he recognizes me or not, that he can feel the love I’ve given him,” she added.
In addition to emotional support, Heming Willis has made significant decisions regarding Bruce’s care. She shared that he has transitioned to a second home equipped with a round-the-clock care team. During an ABC special titled *Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special*, which aired in August 2023, she described this decision as one of the hardest she has faced. “But I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters,” she said, emphasizing the importance of creating an environment that suits their needs.
In her memoir, *The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path*, released in September 2023, Heming Willis reflected on the benefits of seeking help, whether through in-home care or community-based settings. “One benefit to getting help is the ability to get back to your original role in your person’s life,” she noted.
She admitted that it took time to reframe her perspective on caregiving, moving past feelings of guilt. “I can now truly enjoy our fleeting time together,” she stated, expressing her appreciation for the care team that supports Bruce. “I’m forever grateful that I get to enjoy Bruce again as his wife and that our kids have their mom back.”
As the holiday season approaches, Heming Willis continues to focus on the positive aspects of her family’s journey, reinforcing the idea that love and joy can persist, even amidst adversity. With each holiday, they create new memories while honoring the cherished traditions that define their family.
