Laura E. H. Harvell Takes Seat on 7th Judicial District Court

In a notable judicial transition, Colorado’s acting Governor, Dianne Primavera, has appointed Laura E. H. Harvell to the 7th Judicial District Court. This appointment, effective from January 1, 2026, follows the retirement of Judge Mary E. Deganhart. Harvell’s promotion marks a significant step in her legal career, reflecting the state’s confidence in her ability to handle more complex legal matters.

Currently serving as a judge in the Montrose County Court, Harvell has built a diverse portfolio since her appointment in 2022. She has presided over a wide range of criminal and civil cases, showcasing her adeptness in various facets of the law. Her previous experience includes owning her own law practice and working with both the Office of Alternate Defense Counsel and the Office of Respondent Parents’ Counsel. These roles have equipped her with a robust legal foundation and extensive courtroom experience.

Harvell’s academic credentials further bolster her qualifications. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Charleston in 2007 and later obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2014. Over the past decade, Harvell has demonstrated a commitment to legal service and advocacy, skills she will now bring to the 7th Judicial District Court.

Transitioning to a Higher Court

The appointment of Harvell comes at a time when the judicial system is facing increasing demands for competent and compassionate leadership. Her track record in Montrose demonstrates her capability to navigate the complexities of the law and address the needs of the community effectively.

As Judge Deganhart retires, the 7th Judicial District Court prepares for a new chapter under Harvell’s leadership. Her comprehensive understanding of the law and her hands-on experience in various legal roles position her as a valuable asset to the court. The official announcement by the Colorado Governor’s Office highlights the importance of this appointment and its potential impact on the judicial landscape.

With Harvell set to take the bench in early 2026, she will be responsible for adjudicating a variety of cases, ranging from family law to criminal matters. Her elevation to this role not only underscores her personal achievements but also reflects the ongoing commitment of the state to uphold justice through capable and dedicated judges.

As the new year approaches, the 7th Judicial District Court looks forward to welcoming Harvell, whose extensive legal background is expected to enhance the court’s operations and serve the interests of justice in Colorado.
