The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) initiated a significant counterterrorism operation in the northern West Bank on March 13, 2024. This operation aims to prevent the establishment of terrorism in the region, according to a joint statement from the two agencies. The announcement follows an increase in Israeli security measures in the West Bank, particularly in areas such as Tubas, Aqaba, and Tammun.
Details of the Operation
During the extensive operation, Israeli forces raided several homes in the aforementioned locations, causing damage and ransacking their contents. Heavy military reinforcements were deployed, and bulldozers were used to block both main and secondary roads with earth mounds. As a result, military procedures were tightened at the Tayasir and Hamra checkpoints, restricting citizens’ movement and leading to significant traffic congestion.
Helicopter units were also involved in the operation, intermittently firing into the area. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far. The operation reflects a proactive stance by the IDF and Shin Bet to thwart potential terrorist activities in the region.
Recent Engagements and Arrests
In a related development on March 12, IDF forces engaged and killed Sultan al-Ghani, identified as the individual responsible for the murder of Israeli security guard Gideon Perry in 2024. This engagement occurred near Jenin, a city in the northern West Bank. Additionally, five other suspects were arrested during this operation, and authorities seized firearms, explosives, and various ordnance.
Earlier in the week, on March 11, Israeli troops operating in the city of Nablus killed Ala Raouf Shetiyya, who was implicated in the deaths of two IDF soldiers, St.-Sgt. Eliya Hilel and St.-Sgt. Diego Shvisha Harsaj, during a ramming attack. The IDF has emphasized its ongoing commitment to addressing security threats in the region.
This operation highlights the escalating tensions in the West Bank and underscores the complexities of the security situation. As the events unfold, further updates will be provided to clarify the ongoing developments in the area.
